We had the good fortune of connecting with Audrey Gibson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Audrey, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I believe I have a very unique voice. My education and practice mixes psychology, architecture, dance, graphic design and creative direction together. This is an unusual melting pot of fields, but one that I think could bring a fresh perspective to the art and design community. That’s been my main driver behind starting my own business. Instead of trying to fit into a singular mold, I want to embrace and cultivate my strengths.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’ve always been a curious person about all modalities of art. To a degree, I always felt this was a bit of a hinderance when I was younger. I couldn’t focus on one thing long enough to really excel at it before becoming curious and excited about the next form of expression. As an adult, I’ve struggled with feeling like I don’t fit the expected mold. As a dancer, an architect, and a designer, I’m unable to give 100% of me to one craft. This has riddled me with imposter’s syndrome. Ultimately, I think my biggest struggle has been overcoming my own doubts. I have hit a point where I don’t have a path clearly charted by someone else to follow. The more people I talk to and the more I put myself out there, I’ve realized the diversity in my skillset will set me apart and all I have to do is go for it. I have a unique perspective and I’m excited for it to flourish as my business grows.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Denver! Let’s explore my neighborhood. First we would go to Hudson Hill and grab a small bite with a lovingly crafted cortado. I live close by and frequent this place often. It’s full of plants and plays great music, which is an immediate sell for me. Then we’re heading out and taking a beginner pole class at Hard Candy Dance Studio. Unbeknownst to our elders, there is nothing criminal about feeling sexy. Afterwards, we’ll freshen up and head back over to the Golden Triangle to Levan Deli to share a Turkey Club. The sandwiches are delicious and massive. Maybe wine is involved, depending on how healthy we’re feeling. They have a great selection! Then we’re walking across the street to visit the Clyfford Still Museum. This art museum showcases Clyfford Still’s art, which is rather minimal and modern, BUT the experiential architecture is striking and impactful with filtered light and fluid space. Dinner has to be at Cuba Cuba, sharing a carafe of their margarita or mojito. And since this an ideal day, we’ll finish out with a concert at the Ogden and a slice of pizza from Benny Blanco’s!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to give a shoutout to my one and only, my husband! He has been encouraging me and empowering me to embrace my voice and believe in myself since the beginning. I had a tendency to limit my aspirations to what I saw available right in front of me, instead of dreaming larger and fresher. He helped me break out of that. He also has his own business for copywriting, In Your Words. Check him out!
