We had the good fortune of connecting with Benga Tribe and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Benga, how do you think about risk?
Without risk there is no glory. People love being comfortable whether it’s a job or something that gives them security in life. I never thought life was suppose to be easy and I’m willing to wager my life on what I choose believe in. I have far greater faith in myself so every risk I’ve ever taken has taken me further in my career and growth as a person. I’ve always had someone close either give me a negative or positive outlook on my music and it made me realize nobodies opinions really matter because if you love it, its good and someone might feel the same. I’ve had a lot of success at shows and drops while few may form negative opinions I’ve been building a catalog/assets for the future. I’m grateful I took the risks because they bring results whether at the start or the end of a chapter in my career.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My art is my life literally. I’ve felt pain through a lot of trails and tribulations that define me and my purpose. I grew up in new york city so I’ve been harassed by the system from an early age, an avid protestor, locked up a few times for my own youthful ignorance. I’ve taught, performed and practice dance, martial arts and poetry, I’ve served in the military I’m a USMC veteran. I take care of my mother who fell ill while I was in high highschool and younger brother, I’m the head of the household. What am I most proud of? Sometimes its hard to proud but I am proud of just myself, that I’m able to carry on through every obstacle when others might sink into the depression, doubts and fears. I’ve overcome a lot to earn my freedoms and leisures. I started making music professionally in 2020 and I’ve been telling my stories over a variety of beats surrounded majority around trap and drill but I can get very melodic. I’m excited for the music videos/ films I plan to direct/produce this year as well as the many records I’ve been recording. In 2021 I bought my own equipment so I rarely am away from recording. I am proud of my single “Tired Of Umm’ which Spotify put on the radio and received easily over 1,000 plays in its first week and I am always excited to see my music/videos go further than my expectations which are always high. I’m overcoming the battle between independent and labels right now; I’m understanding the business more after I took a music business class in LA. I’ve done a lot of traveling to build my sound/experiences. One of the most important lessons I’ve learned is to be myself, experiment, start from the top, continue to punch the clock no matter how I feel. I’m always correcting/adjusting my diet to my life for longevity and overall health. My brand is me, all of my art is inspired by pain/traumas over the years I’ve turnt into motivation, my passion and stories I am healing from. I have mood swings, anxiety and ptsd my whole life a rollercoaster. When I first asked to do this interview I was coming out of the hospital I think because I got laced a few times from individuals hating on my success. I had just finished a month of doing three shows back to back, 10 dis requesting my music from my “Unapologetic B” EP. The greatest thing about my art is living it, its just like the movies I grew up watching but in my perspective so better. I get paid and get to live my life while creating that’s a big blessing and I don’t take that for granted. Not a lot of people can be targeted and feared and live to tell the stories. Anything is possible and everybody can achieve their dreams but life will continuously test you the whole world needs to know that as well.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’m from east nyc so If you’re rolling with my plan for the week. I’d introduce you to a few Jamaican spots because I love Jamaican food. Yes I am Nigerian but home cooking is incomparable and I become basis. I don’t drink but there is a ton of great spots to get a drink. The movies in Manhattan is a must hit because the seats recline if you have a partner. We also have a ton of great museums. I would recommend going to central park if you’re a nature person but be mindful its huge and visitors tend to get lost. I’m a free thinker so I don’t set a schedule I go experience and see where life leads me so listen to your intuition if you’re in nyc. DO NOT go anywhere you sense danger and do not go out late without proper company anywhere, and always prepare a way to get back inside if you’re drinking.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d like to shoutout my mother for telling me “do what makes you happy,” I grew up in a Nigerian home so that isn’t very common especially when I am an artist. I would also like to shoutout my wife for her love and support. MiQo SiX who sent me to this interview and my tribe/family overall who support me and all my endeavors.
