Meet Benjamin Toh | Doctor of Physical Therapy and Pain and Movement Expert

We had the good fortune of connecting with Benjamin Toh and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Benjamin, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
After 6 years of working in the traditional healthcare model which is dictated heavily by large corporate insurance entities, I decided I wanted to do things different in a way that is better for patients. Corporations were dictating how care could be delivered, how much care could be provided, which diagnoses counted or didn’t count, pushing productivity and numbers, and not allowing for wellness or preventative care. This model puts the focus entirely on profits not patients, causes burnout in healthcare providers, and benefits nobody but the payer in the end. I wanted to change all of those things, and I decided the only way I could do that was by starting my own business. My vision is to provide high quality physical therapy that is patient centered, focuses on their goals, and helps people to return to 100% of their function if not more, again according to their goals. I also want to integrate wellness care and education and be able to help people prevent future injury.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
My business is unique in that I am breaking out of the traditional insurance run model, and seeing clients on a cash-pay out of network basis. While it gives me the freedom to provide the best care possible that focuses on my patients, it also can be a great option for many people who don’t want to go through the system and be treated like a number, or individuals with poor or no insurance. This freedom to treat people in the best way possible excites me, as it is why I got into my profession in the first place. I love my job. It is incredibly rewarding to me to be able to help people overcome pain and return to activities or sports that they have been avoiding for a long time.
Starting this business has been one of the most challenging things I have ever undertaken in my life. I heard from everyone how challenging it would be, and it is many multiple times more difficult than I ever expected. And challenges continue to arise. But, the beautiful thing is that I am not discouraged or defeated by these challenges. Many people have told me you have to embrace and enjoy the process, and I have found this to be very true. The challenges of starting this business have pushed me so far out of my comfort zone, but I have enjoyed the growth it has brought about in me not only professionally but also personally. I have learned so many things and I have truly found it invigorating.
So yes some of the main lessons I have learned along the way are to 1. embrace and enjoy the process 2. know clearly and always remember my why 3. Be people focused and always focus and ask about the needs of the person I am talking with, business associate or potential client.
I want the world to know that my business strives to bring a positive change to healthcare, and give people a more positive impression of physical therapy and healthcare in general. I want to show them that there is better care available and that there is hope for their problem, and hope to feel treated like a human being and to feel truly heard. I will always take the time with every one of my patients/clients to hear their story and look at the whole picture for them, head to toe, mind and body to ensure they get the best most lasting results for their health and mobility.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would take them on a drive up Rampart range road, and go camping by Twin Lakes, Aspen, or Telluride. For local hikes I would take them to 7 bridges trail, Section 16, and Garden of the Gods, and try to get tickets on the train ride up Pikes Peak. For food and drink in Colorado Springs I would take them to Coati, 503w, Brooklyn’s on Boulder, Little Nepal, Chiba Bar, Yellow Mountain Tea House, Saigon Grill, Il Vicino, Tacos Don Lalo taco truck, and the Principal’s Office.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to give a shoutout to my family back in Chicago, particularly my dad and brothers who both run their own businesses and have for a long time encouraged me to think outside of the box, be a visionary, and create something of my own that was meaningful to me and allowed me to have the career and life that I wanted. It took me some time to get there, but I am grateful for their encouragement. I want to thank all of the fellow entrepreneurs I have met along the way who have given me free advice, encouragement, and connections to help support me in my path. I have found that being an entrepreneur can feel like a bit of a lonely world at times, and it is so encouraging to have others on a similar journey as myself and a little ahead of me on that journey, come along side me and encourage me.
I am thankful for my BNI networking group Professional Advantage that is full of amazing humans and business people who are all a great encouragement to me and great allies in helping me grow my business.
