We had the good fortune of connecting with Beth Wood and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Beth, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
A huge motivator in my life has been being able to do life by my own rules, in my own way, and in my own time. I want to live in my authenticity and truth, and I wasn’t finding anything that aligned with me in the corporate world. I also saw a huge gap in the market for small business owners with small budgets who needed help to get up and running. It’s rare to have a huge budget when you’re just starting out but you hear that you need a website, a solid brand, SEO, merchandise, and on and on. While all these things can be absolutely important to the growth of your business, you have to prioritize in the beginning and stretch your budget. That’s where my team comes in. We help to strategize with you to identify the areas you need to focus on that will build your business, which things you can automate or optimize, and which things you need to delegate. This way we save our clients time so they can focus on building a solid business, reduce stress, and maximize their budgets. This helps me build a business and lifestyle I love, while also helping my clients do the same.
What should our readers know about your business?
I’ll be the first to tell you that I am terrible at resting. I like work, it gives me pleasure to know I’m embarking on a new adventure or gaining ground in an area I’m passionate about. But work without rest is dangerous and I had my come-to-Jesus moment a few years back with a series of health issues which cascaded into a bed-ridden season of helplessness. It was then that I realized I had to work for a purpose and do it in a way that honored my health. I was forced into a less-than-ideal “vacation”. Now I take vacations for real… I’d spent years working in an office as an executive assistant and manager. I would stare at pictures of farms and far-off places during down time between appointments, wishing I could fulfill my desire of helping people in their lives while working from home. I wanted ample time to take care of all the farm creatures my heart desired, be totally present in my relationships with my husband and family, and be as self sufficient as I could – all while making money to support my family. Those dreams took a back seat until I found myself in bed, unable to move or walk for more than a few minutes at a time because of severe digestive disorders caused by poor habits and high stress. I spent almost a year sustained on the only things my body could digest – rice, avocados, and apples. I knew I had to change my lifestyle and heal my body. My dream of a small prairie homestead was calling to me and I knew I had to make it happen.
I began Rosewood Solutions for two reasons, one was to be able to work remotely so I could support my family while pursuing a healthier life. The other was to have the capacity to help people pursue their dreams regardless of their location or proximity to me. By forming a virtually-based business I was able to do both.
Health has always been important to me and I started to connect the dots between the quality of my work life to the quality of my health. We were never meant to work a 9-5 job in a sterile building doing tasks that are mundane and lifeless. I completely changed my workdays, my habits, and my environment and I have never been healthier! Each day I take care of my small flock of chickens and quail, I snuggle with my cat, and I train my dog. When my husband gets home from a long day of work I have the ability to actually turn work off and focus solely on him. I can take a vacation if I want to because my business can run without me through the systems and processes we also provide to our clients.
My goal for my clients is to help them automate or delegate the tasks that drain them so they can take back their love of life. Many of my clients began their business because of a passion which has slowly been snuffed out because the day-to-day tasks have taken over. Those day to day tasks are important- but your freedom, health, and priorities are far more important. The tasks can always be automated or delegated, or at the very least minimized. Let us help you get back your time, get back your freedom, start dreaming and casting vision so you can grow your company to new heights- and still take a vacation.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
One of my goals in building my company was to give myself the ability to work from home and build my little homestead. I love teaching friends new skills like baking sourdough or educating them on regenerative agriculture. Our first stop would be my place for a good home-cooked meal and fresh bread and eggs from my chickens. Then probably to Pagosa Springs for a trip to the hot springs and Rift Raft (my favorite brewery). Once we are back in town, I would take them to The Living Room to look for a new plant, maybe Sun Water Spa for a good massage, and then Abby’s for a great burger. If we’re looking to extend the evening a bit, we might hit Ivywild for some delicious drinks!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Gosh, so many people! I wouldn’t be where I am without phenomenal mentors, clients, and community. Miah Coen at MB Images who does all of my photography and is a very close friend, Lydia Andrews of Maple & Moss Designs who has shown me how to juggle personal and professional and be a successful woman who hasn’t sacrificed an ounce of who she is. My sweet Mom, June Gordon, who always encouraged me to pursue not only my dreams, but also to do so despite all the roadblocks – she has the most resiliency I’ve ever seen. Most importantly, to my incredible husband who has trusted me and believed in what I could do and has chosen to sacrifice in order to help me succeed. The people you chose to surround yourself with will help determine your success.
