We had the good fortune of connecting with Brenna Nelson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Brenna, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I officially started my business, BEN Squared LLC, in August 2020 as a way for me to transition from doing photography as a hobby and really start to make a name for myself within the photography industry in Denver. I wanted to have a formal platform where I could connect with clients and begin making connections with other creators in the area. Starting my own business has helped me to expand beyond working just with friends and family and has given me a taste of what working as a full time photographer could look like in the future!

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
One thing I love about photography, and life in general, is there is no clear path. So to share some information about me, I have a bachelor’s degree in computer science and a masters degree in website design and development. I am currently working as a full stack engineer at an aerospace company. For me, starting my own business as a full time graduate student and a full time employee has been very difficult. My days are filled with work and homework, leaving me little time for focusing on my business. As a result, I have learned the true value of time and to never take it for granted. This takes many forms whether it be squeezing in a little photo editing where I can or taking a well deserved nap.
My business is very important to me and I know it will be what I put into it, so I am dedicated to making it the best it can be. As I begin to close the student chapter of my life I am excited to see the ways my business can flourish as I continue to put more time and love into it.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I live just outside of Denver, in Littleton, so visiting the heart of Denver is always a fun occasion for me! If I were to plan a day-trip for my best friend and I would begin with food, because Denver has some of the best food around! We would begin the day with some delicious birria tacos and yummy drinks from Mister Oso in the Rino Art District. From there we would head to High Point Creamery for ice cream. After all, you cannot forget dessert! From there we would head to Ball Arena to watch a Colorado Avalanche Hockey game. Hockey games are such a blast, especially during a season where the Avs are kicking butt! All in all, this would be a perfect day spent in good company for me.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to shoutout my father and grandfather. Photography has always been a constant in my life as they have both been big into capturing photos of everything. Without their love for the art, I may have never developed my own love and skill for photography.
