We had the good fortune of connecting with Britanny Gutierrez and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Britanny, what role has risk played in your life or career?
When I think about risk I think of the unknown. I’ve always been a person whom likes to know what is next as far as what I’m going to do with school, work and let’s just say have for dinner a day ahead. Risk has definitely played a huge role for me. Just to give a small background of myself, I come from a Latina background. My ethnicity is: Guatemalan, Mexican and Salvadorian. Both my mom and dad were always telling me I needed to go to college and get a degree. It was embedded in me that I had to do this. Had to because they (my parents) didn’t have this opportunity and wanted a better life for me. Went to college, got my degree and found a job at a Residential Teen Center in Tarzana, CA. At the teen center, I was able to work my way from being a program aide, lead program aide, alumni coordinator and being a residential supervisor. During my time as a program aide, I decided to enroll myself to esthetics school. You might be wondering, ‘Why that transition?’ A friend invited me to her school to get a facial and I immediately fell in love with the process from beginning to end of getting a facial (granted I also had a love for makeup which I have not mentioned yet). After completing my 12 month program of esthetics school I worked at Ulta as an esthetician for a few months. Then, another friend that I was in school with offered me to rent her studio (Burbank, CA) one day out of the week (Sunday’s) to help her and also help me build my clientele. From there I was working full time at the teen center and one day out of the week for my clients. Over a few months, I was able to ask my friend to rent out another day of the week which of course she was happy too ! Months passes and I was promoted to the supervise position at the teen center while working weekends to fulfill my dream of being my own boss. I was working seven days out of the week which I chose and granted some days were hard. I was so determined to have a small business doing this. After eight months of being a supervisor, I decided to end my term with the teen center. I risked leaving a salary paid job with benefits to be my own solo esthetician boss. I then started working five days out of the week to focus on esthetics and be committed to my clients. This was the best decision I could have made as I was so happy to work everyday with what I love to do: being an esthetician.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Going back to the risk taking of my life/career. I am most proud that I was able to start at the studio one day a week, to two and eventually for five days a week as a solo esthetician back in California. This did take some time for me to build clientele, but what helped me was posting everyday on my Instagram account. I would post stories, add the location of the studio and ask my family members to come in and get a facial so I have content to post. I do have to admit there were days where I did not have clients scheduled for a service, but I would take advantage of the time be at the studio to post on my supplies and my equipment to use up time so I didn’t let the day go. I would also deep clean those days and at times I’d get reached out too for a last minute appointment.

Lessons I have learned along the way of working as a solo esthetician is that there are people who might not come back to you and that is OKAY. We all work off of energies and all you can do is be nice, educate those who are there for your service and also take care of yourself too. As estheticians, we work with our hands and sit down, we need to take care of ourselves by getting a full body massage or seeing a chiropractor.

I’d want the world to know that if you want to do something that is out of the “norm” please don’t be afraid of doing that. Do not care what people might think of you, you are your own individual person that can make your dream and passion come true.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Since moving from California to Colorado, I have discovered so many good spots to eat! Snowl is my go to spot to have boba and dessert that is in Aurora.

There are so many good spots to eat, but in Colorado Springs – Rudy’s BBQ is by far the best food spot ! Along with being in the Springs, Manitou incline is so much fun, long, but worth the view !

For sushi I LOVE Tatsu Izakaya on University in Denver.

For seafood, Mariscos El Rey in Denver is sooo GOOD! I love thier Micheladas !

Can’t forget the Korean BBQ too ! Seoul Korean BBQ & Hot Pot in Aurora is also a hidden gem!

Red Rocks of course is a staple, Lost lake trail in Nederland, Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, and Herman Guilch Trailhead (long, but such a beautiful hike).

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
A person I ‘d like to give recognition too is Ever, my boyfriend. He has supported me since the beginning with buying my first Sony camera to create YouTube videos, my first high-end makeup palette to start doing makeup tutorials, the ring light to enhance the quality of my videos. He taught me how to manage money to purchase equipment for my esthetics room. He is the person who is my number one mentor who till this day Ever continues to act as a mentor.
