Meet Brittany Kane | Artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Brittany Kane and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Brittany, why did you pursue a creative career?
Mine is the standard cliche of most artists: I want to get paid to do what makes me happy! You never work a day if you’re doing what you love, and that for me is painting and designing. I have put so much energy into making money for someone else, when I should be the main person capitalizing off of me and my hard work.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Had you told me 5 years ago that I would be making and selling art in 2022, I would not have believed you in the slightest. The only art classes I had taken at that point were the ones to needed to graduate high school as I had studied math, foreign language, and criminal justice in college. My partner Josh is also an artist and he was the one to encourage me to pickup a creative outlet to help manage the stress of my corporate job. I began painting and experimenting with different mediums in 2018. In 2020 when the pandemic hit, I was laid off from my corporate hospitality job but a very special opportunity came along. An old coworker and friend had seen I was making art and asked if I wanted to hang some at the brewery he worked at named Long Table. I didn’t think anyone would buy my art and I had no job still at that point so I had nothing to lose. One of my good friends who is an art handler and artist herself helped me to hang my paintings while also teaching me the processes since this was my first time professionally hanging artwork. The next day my first piece sold for $500. I was so shocked, excited and overwhelmingly proud of myself as I had stepped way outside my comfort zone. My pieces continued to sell and I was able to get a studio in Denver in late 2020.
I have succeeded, I have failed, and I have learned about so many things from website design, small business management, framing and wiring, product sourcing, print design, along with many styles of painting and mediums.
My mission for my art and brand is to help build up my community and give back, while sparking conversation and evoking emotion in the viewer.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would start off at Avanti up in the highlands. Grab a nice drink and take in a view of the city skyline while enjoying the gorgeous Colorado sun. All while mixing in enough local food options to satisfy any craving. I would then head to 1up on Colfax (has to be the Colfax one) to play some classic video games while enjoying a Sippin’ Pretty. Next day would begin with a delicious brunch at Snooze or Dozens, followed by a day at Meow Wolf. Afterwards, Uncle is on the menu with a spicy chicken ramen meal. I prefer the west Wash Park location as they have homemade wontons as well. The Denver Art Museum has the whole new side open after years of construction so that is definitely a go to spot. Right next door to the DAM is a small Italian restaurant called Lo Stella. The owner is from Italy and they have restaurants in Portofino. The Nonna Laura bolognese is his grandmothers recipe and easily the best thing on the menu! Farmers markets around Denver are always on the list, especially the Cherry Creek farmers market on Wednesdays and Saturdays, and the old south pearl street market on Sundays. Once you get all the goodies from the farmers market, head to my favorite local cheese monger called Truffle Cheese Shop. Try samples and then purchase to pair with your fresh foods and wine!
A nice hike up in Boulder and walking the pearl street shops is a great way to enjoy the day. Finally, a night spent at a Red Rocks concert in Morrison and a stay at the Morrison lodge with private hot tubs is as Colorado as you can get!
I would round out the time with a final meal at Matsuhisa in cherry creek where they have the absolute best sea bass!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to dedicate my Shoutout to Long Table Brewhouse, especially Nate, Chris, and Zach, as they gave me my initial opportunity to show and sell my art. My first sale ever was a painting the day after hanging my art there in 2020. As more sold, my confidence in myself and my art continued to grow. Over the last two years they have had unwavering support and zero creative restrictions (an artists dream), and have let me use their space as almost a personal gallery. I am very grateful for them and their support.
