We had the good fortune of connecting with Brooks Hurbis and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Brooks, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
I’ve always been a pretty risk averse person. I think about big decisions from every angle and am a big fan of a pro con list. So quitting my cushy tech sales job to pursue my passion project full time was a BIG risk. I had no idea if building a business largely from social media would be sustainable, if my success to date had been “luck”, or if this whole thing would work. I held off on taking the leap probably longer than I should have. Taking the risk and leaving a stable job felt terrifying. I attempted to get all my ducks in a row and feel “ready” before taking the leap. I finally realized that I’d never feel truly ready and I’d rather put my all into my passion project now. That risk and taking the jump has been the best decision I’ve ever made. Being a very rational, planned out person has been a big asset in my life but I’ve learned that without risk, we can’t grow. Without risk we stay in our comfort zone. Without risk we live life with a lot of “what ifs”. So take the risk. Even if it’s a very calculated one, take the risk. Most big ideas and passion pursuits require a little risk.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I created SweatSimple after struggling with my own fitness journey. I had tried just about ever fad diet out there, thought more exercise was the solution, cut out dairy, gluten, sugar, etc. and was in a constant cycle of gaining and losing the same 20lbs wondering why nothing was “working”. When I finally found creators and coaches who followed an evidence based approach and I was able to find success myself, I was SO frustrated that it had taken this long. So frustrated by all of the conflicting information out there in the fitness industry. So frustrated that there seemed to be so many “rules” on how to eat but none of it was actually all that true.

So I became a coach myself. With the goal of making fitness & nutrition seem simple & approachable. I became a certified personal trainer & nutrition coach and set a goal to help as many people as possible heal their relationship with food & feel like their most confident self. It started as a passion project while I was still working my 9-5 tech sales job but slowly grew over time. At some point I realized that this was how I wanted to spend my entire day, not just a fraction of it. The joy and fulfillment I got from helping people on their fitness journey was unmatched and I wanted this to be my full time gig. Everyday after finishing my 9-5 and on weekends I would work on SweatSimple. Helping my clients, creating content and doing continued education. It was a tough period but it was so worth it to call this my job now.

My approach is to make fitness fit your lifestyle. I want you to be able to enjoy all of your favorite food & drinks while still making progress towards your goals. I want my clients to feel confident they can still go out to eat, get ice cream with their kids and have some drinks on the weekends. My coaching is all about building healthy habits that last a lifetime so any progress we make together is easy to maintain. It’s not a quick fix or a diet. It’s truly a lifestyle.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’m a big hiker so I love starting my weekend with a hike in the summer. Red Rocks to Morrison Slide trail is my favorite close to Denver spot.

My other love besides the mountains is Wine so I love hitting up Bigsby’s Folly, Postinio, Atimo Wine or bouncing around the breweries in Rino.

For food I love MyNeighborFelix, Pizzeria Lui, Syrup, Cart Driver, Odell Brewing in Sloans Lake, Fire on the Mountain, and little man ice cream.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My fiancé for being my biggest cheerleader, providing constant laughs when I was trying to manage a full time job + a rapidly growing side hustle, and for encouraging & supporting me to take the leap even when I felt I wasn’t ready.
