We had the good fortune of connecting with Caitlin Clark and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Caitlin, every day, we about how much execution matters, but we think ideas matter as well. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
The evolution of Lark + Rue was born from my own need. I have dry, sensitive skin that a lifetime of searching for the perfect combination of soap and lotion, came up empty every time. After taking a few classes on making my own and experiencing the difference in my skin, I was hooked! I started making soap for myself and my family, gradually branching out to bath bombs, lotions, and other skincare products. Family, friends, and coworkers began asking for some and I realized that maybe they have also been searching for relief and my soaps might be the solution for them and others. That is when the idea of Lark + Rue became a reality.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
The journey has been slow, filled with failed experiments and many lessons learned. I’m at a very different place than what I imagined when I started. I’ve grown not only as a business owner but as a person. What started as a simple desire to help others with their dry, sensitive skin has become a passion for making space for self reflection and encouraging self love. A place where we rebel against the idea that we must always be doing to earn rest, and instead we are worthy of comfort and rest as we are right now and as we become who we want to be. I’ve learned that soap and skincare can be a gateway to giving yourself the space to become your best self.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
There are so many great things to do and see in our city. I love mixing more common tourist destinations with exploring the local shops, art galleries, and unique eats. So after a few days visiting Garden of the Gods and taking the train up Pikes Peak, we would have a day to meander downtown. I’d have to start that day with breakfast at the Urban Egg for some of their gluten free cinnamon swirl pancakes, drop in at Cronk Art and Curiosities for some new butterflies or crazy comfy socks from Foot Clothes, and then wander the rest of downtown and explore the other unique boutiques. And we’d end the day watching the sunset at any of the super yummy restaurants. I can’t get enough of our sunsets.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Maybe it’s a little cliché or corny but I love my clients. They are so amazing. Many started off as friends or family but they have all become so dear to me. Their encouragement and feedback lift my spirits when small business life gets hard, often without even realizing it, their little messages of love come at times when I doubt myself and consider throwing in the towel. Some of these amazing people I’ve never met in person but we’ve become friends over the years. It’s such a special relationship that I treasure. I’m grateful for those relationships and to be a part of their lives.
