We had the good fortune of connecting with Cam Shrum and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Cam, can you talk to us a bit about the social impact of your business?
At Summit County Jiu Jitsu, our mission goes beyond teaching martial arts — we’re building confidence, discipline, and connection in our community. We provide a welcoming space where kids, teens, and adults of all backgrounds can challenge themselves, grow stronger, and learn respect both on and off the mats.

We regularly host self-defense workshops, women’s classes, and community events designed to empower locals and foster a sense of belonging. By promoting physical and mental wellness, positive mentorship, and teamwork, we aim to make Summit County a healthier, more connected place to live.

We love being part of the Frisco community, and we give back by hosting free community classes, supporting local events, and creating a place where people can feel supported, safe, and strong. For us, Jiu Jitsu isn’t just about technique — it’s about helping people live better, more connected lives.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Back in 2021, myself and three partners decided to buy Summit County BJJ. At the time the world was coming out of COVID and the previous owner had stuggled to keep the business going during the pandamic and had decided to close. And instead of closing, four of us who trained at the gym decided to go in an buy the gum from the orginal owner.

At the time, I had recently opened my first business C&K Archery, which is located in the same shopping center, so the time commitment for having two business seemed almost daunting. However, the best part of going from one owner and a manager to four owners, was a blessing. Each owner has thier own strengths and it really helped find the time to make the gym better.

When we prchased the gym, we had a total of 24 paying memebers. Through rebuilding the culture we wanted, having a bunch of people donating thier time to help coaching when we first started,a nd most impoartantly having a great coach step up and restart our kids program, we were able to grow to 100+ monthly membership. So the number one thing that I learned through all of that is, if you build a family culture at your gym, the community will show up and support you. And that is what our cummunity has done for our gym!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
When my firends come into town, there are a few must stops! First thing we are going to do is grab a great bearkfast at the Butterhorn in Frisco, CO. And once we have recovered from breackfast, we’ll probably either go for a hike around Ptramagin or Peak 1, before lucnh. If it is winter, then we’ll probably ski Breckenridge or Copper depending on who has the best snow.

From there we might go shoot some archery mid-day or stay out in the beaturiful Summit County weather. Typically, though we skip some lunch to save room for dinner. But before we grub out for dinner, we’ll get some training in at the gym. Most days we have and adults Jiu Jitsu class. followed by Muay Thai class, so depending on how tired the day’s activities were will detereimien how many classes we stay for.

Form there we would hit town places for dinner. The first is the best Chinese Restauratn in town, China Sczechuan, which is right next door. Or if we are wanting the best food in the county, then we would have setup a late reservation to got to Rootstalk in Breckenridge, CO. Finish the night off with a night cap at bars like Burke & Riley’s in Brecknridge, and that would have been a killer day.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Being a community based business, in a community where business is typically focues on tourissim, we have to give a huge shout out to all of our members, but especially those of our members who have been with us since Day One! And we couldn’t have any meembers with our our Ownership Group, but more importantly the Coaching Staff! Without great coaches, we couldn’t have the great Jiu Jitsu, Mentorship, and Cultrure at our gym.
