We had the good fortune of connecting with Carl Jensen and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Carl, what makes you happy? Why?
Oooh, it’s complicated. At the core, I like some structure in the form of a daily routine. This routing involves exercise, working on projects, taking long walks, social interactions, and making space for myself.
My projects include a blog (1500days.com), two podcasts (Mile High FI, Mindy On Money), and a home remodel which is about to turn 5 years old. Arrrgh!
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I love to teach people about money. I came about it in a weird way. I wasn’t happy with my career (software developer), so I put together a plan to turbocharge my savings and retire early. At the same time, I decided to document my journey via a blog: 1500days.com.
I didn’t think anyone would ever read it, but it caught on. It’s pretty cool when random stranger come up and tell me that I impacted their lives.
The moment I’m most happy about was giving a talk to 500 people. The ultra-shy kid who stuttered manage to go onstage and entertain a crowd for 25 minutes: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=av4nIb5_AAE
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I love to be outside. We’d hike Sanitas in Boulder and also spend a lot of time in Rocky Mountain National Park.
I’d show them around my hometown of Longmont. We’d walk down Main Street, have a beer at Wibby, and dinner at Jefe’s.
We’d head up to Salida for a couple of days. If it’s winter, we’d snowboard Monarch Mountain. If summer, we’d raft the Arkansas and hike a 14er.
Finally, we’d catch a show at Red Rocks.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My wife Mindy has supported all of my crazy ideas including leaving formal work at the tender age of 43. Thanks pardner!
