We had the good fortune of connecting with Nita Collins and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Nita, what do you attribute your success to?
I ask myself often, Am I successful? I’m inclined to say yes, my work sells easily and usually quickly since I began in 2004. This is despite my effort to hide from traditional success and do the opposite of advice on building a brand and selling. I don’t hide who I am and am candid about creative struggle and fires . So, maybe it’s authentic tone? I’ll just throw that out there because I don’t know if that makes sense. I’m obsessed with art and always have been. Other people’s art in any media or style and mine. I dig constantly for Obscure media and folklores, seemingly unrelated flotsam. So, once I get talking about it I get very excited! That burst of otherworldly energy seems to help my networking . I just talk too much have abundant ideas that I share openly. It’s brought me so much love from the art world and to me that’s success! I’m doomed to create till the day I die where or not it earns me a cent it’s a remarkable affliction. That said I’m still tinkering with my brand Sleetwealth : “Wonders and Atrocities “ for me it’s about mystery, a certain sacredness of the aged. An unsettling intoxicating beauty!

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Nothing discernible sets me apart. I’m like any other artist. Francis Bacon, H.R Giger , Hans Bellmer ,Frida Kahlo and Frank Frazetta , Michelangelo combined.:) My work is unique in that each one contains a soul that draws the viewer in. My works are symbolic and emotive and rawly existential not often seen in sculptures of children. It’s been painful sometimes to be undervalued in an art hungry society with junk food taste . Theres self doubts and struggle to raise the bar .To be “ good enough “ .I don’t have an art degree or awards or even a CV to validate my status. I just create because I must! I suffer from ADHD, dyscalculia and Edherls danlos syndrome. I had stage II colon cancer in 2017-18 Every hurdle turns into fuel. I see every twist as another art subject. And I just create the fook out of life! Haha don’t print that!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’d take a bus load of friends to Shedd Aquarium and Zombie burger in Chicago. And depending on the mood Butoh dance . I’ve always wanted to go on an expedition to photograph the old buildings. We would have to stir up every thrift , pawn and antique store in the quad cities and beyond. Le Claire has the famous pickers shop. I really love road trips and old junk!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
There are so many that encouraged , helped and believed in me that a list would surly miss someone if it wasn’t over a foot long. So I will keep it short and special. Thank you my fellow dark artists ,my Patreon supporters and most of all Rosie Rojas ,Cindy Obenstine and my fur angel Sequoia.
