We had the good fortune of connecting with Caroline Johnson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Caroline, what is the most important factor behind your success?
Relationships. I’m fortunate to have made some amazing relationships through my photography business & life in general. My passion is everything related to photography. I love the business aspect mixed with getting to be creative while simultaneously meeting so many different people. One of the biggest compliments I receive as a photographer is when people comment on how fun and enjoyable it is working with me. Making people feel comfortable is always my top goal, as it’ll show in the photos. Focusing on creating a positive customer experience for those I’m photographing is what I think personally has contributed to the success behind my photography business.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
For me, my love for photography started at an early age. In high school, I would spend hours on the computer looking at the work of other photographers. I collected National Geographic magazines and was always mesmerized by the photographs. I’ve always been fascinated at how imagery can tell a bigger story. I was eventually gifted a DSLR camera & taught myself how to shoot in manual. I read books, took online classes, shot sessions for free, and got lost in absorbing anything and everything photography-related (still the case today!) In college, I had the opportunity on two occasions to travel & volunteer at a few orphanages in central Jamaica. These kids lacked everyday amenities: water, beds to sleep in, and a plethora of other conveniences that most of us are lucky to have. I took my DSLR camera along & in between projects, I took photos of some of the kids. Most of them had never seen a camera before, let alone had pictures ever taken of themselves. The experience of seeing their reactions to their portraits visible through my camera monitor was pure joy. After that trip, my love for photography flourished.

It took years and wasn’t until recently that I went full time with my photography business. There was always fear in me that if I pursued photography full time I wouldn’t enjoy it as much since it’s always been both my passion & side hustle. Now that I’m actually doing it, it’s incredibly rewarding. I have good days and bad days, just like everyone else. But the good always outweighs the bad. I wake up everyday and get to focus on something I love. I get to meet different people, visit new places, and travel to fun destinations all while getting to document life through my lens. I feel like I’m living my dream life.

It truly goes behind simply taking photos. It’s my life. My everything. I love making people feel confident when they’re behind my camera. So, what is one thing I want the world to know about me or my brand? I want the world to know my heart. That I pour my everything into being the photographer and person that I am.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
This seems like a frequent weekend, because we always have friends visiting Denver and I love it! I’m a big brunch gal, so we’d start off the day at Lucile’s for a Bloody Mary and biscuits and gravy. After brunch, we’d hit up a park to walk my dog and see some of the surrounding neighborhoods (Wash Park and Platte Park are my personal favorites, I love looking at all the beautiful homes & bungalows). During the summer, we love to be anywhere by water… lately friends’ rooftop pools have been common for our afternoon hangout spots. If the pool is too crowed, we’d likely hit up a lake or go floating! Come nighttime we would head to Red Rocks, my favorite place ever for live music!

Colorado has tons of sweet spots & the weather always seems to be beautiful and sunny. Many people come to Colorado to ski, but Denver in the summertime is my personal favorite. You can’t go wrong with the food scene, things to do, and the overall vibe of the city.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There are a number of people who have supported my efforts as a small business owner. My friends & family have always encouraged me to chase my dreams. My partner Scott is my biggest advocate. He brings so much positivity with his outlook to life & that in turn helps me to try to always focus on the good. It’s pretty cool when you have a dream and something you’re so passionate that is your livelihood – the cherry on top is having a support system of family and friends who all want to see you be successful. I hit the jackpot when it comes to friends, family, and my community.
