We had the good fortune of connecting with Cat Mackinley and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Cat, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Starting my own business was really about creating a space where I could combine my artistic background with a deep desire to make a meaningful impact in people’s lives—especially for women who may be struggling with confidence due to medical or cosmetic concerns. The turning point came when my sister, a brilliant scientist, felt self-conscious about a facial scar from surgery. Seeing how that small mark affected her confidence in such a major way pushed me to research solutions—and that’s when I discovered the world of cosmetic and paramedical tattooing.

With my background as a fine artist and goldsmith, I’ve always worked with my hands and had a strong eye for detail, but I was searching for something more personal—something where I could see and feel the impact of my work. This industry gave me that. I knew right away that this was the path for me: a way to empower others through artistry, restore confidence, and create something both beautiful and deeply functional. From there, it was all-in—I used my savings, took out a loan, and committed fully to building Ink & Gold Studio from the ground up.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My career began in fine arts and jewelry—restoring and creating detailed, meaningful pieces. While I loved the craftsmanship, I realized I wanted deeper connection with the people I was creating for. That desire led me to cosmetic and paramedical tattooing, which felt like the perfect fit for my skills and my heart. I trained intensively while working part-time and overcame a serious car accident near the end of my training, which delayed my launch but deepened my determination.

What sets me apart is my fine detail work, my understanding of natural beauty, and my deep care for each client. I want every person who walks into my studio to feel seen, supported, and empowered.

I’m especially proud of working with clients who’ve gone through medical treatments—like chemotherapy or surgery—and helping them feel like themselves again. This work is so personal, and every transformation reminds me why I started.

The biggest lesson I’ve learned is to stay rooted in your purpose. Growth takes time, and there will be setbacks—but if you lead with heart, people feel that. Ink & Gold Studio isn’t just about aesthetics—it’s about confidence, healing, and creating beauty that feels true to you.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my best friend were visiting Denver for a week, I’d definitely make sure they got the perfect mix of the city’s creative energy, natural beauty, and amazing food scene.

Day 1: We’d start with brunch at Snooze or Onefold—I’m a big breakfast person! Then walk around RiNo Art District, checking out the murals, studios, and indie shops. We’d pop into a local gallery or two and wrap the day with rooftop cocktails at El Five, which has incredible views and tapas.

Day 2: We’d head to Red Rocks, even if there’s no concert—just to hike around and take in the surreal beauty. Lunch at The Eddy Taproom in Golden, then maybe dip our feet in Clear Creek or check out local shops. In the evening, dinner in LoHi—probably at Root Down or Linger, which both have such fun vibes and great menus.

Day 3: We’d plan a spa or self-care day—maybe a massage, sauna, or something restorative—and I’d definitely bring them by my studio for a personalized service, just for fun. Then we’d hit up The Wild downtown for coffee and cocktails, depending on the hour, and maybe catch a show at DCPA or a local drag performance.

Day 4: Thrift and vintage day—Meek Vintage, Garage Sale Vintage, and then treasure hunting on South Broadway. We’d break it up with tacos from Taco Tequila Whiskey and stop into Fancy Tiger Crafts (I always find inspiration there).

Day 5: Day trip to Boulder or Nederland—maybe a peaceful hike in Chautauqua Park or a visit to the quirky shops in Ned. Dinner back in Denver at Annette in Stanley Marketplace—it’s one of my absolute favorite places.

Day 6: Chill day. Maybe brunch and a walk in City Park, rent a paddle boat, or stroll the Denver Botanic Gardens. In the evening, I love the cozy neighborhood vibes at Il Posto or Bar Dough.

Day 7: Grab coffee from Little Owl or MiddleState, do one last loop through Union Station, and maybe pick up some last-minute souvenirs at 5 Green Boxes or Modern Nomad before heading to the airport.

Denver has so many layers—artistic, outdoorsy, down-to-earth, and just a little bit magical. I love showing people around and letting them experience the energy that makes this place feel like home.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’ve been incredibly fortunate to have a few close family friends who supported me from the very beginning of this journey. Their belief in me has meant the world—it’s the kind of steady encouragement that fills your heart and keeps you going, especially during the hard days. Knowing that someone sees your potential, even when you’re still finding your footing, is an incredibly powerful gift.

As I’ve grown my business, I’ve also connected with some amazing women who are on their own entrepreneurial paths. The mutual support, inspiration, and genuine excitement we share for each other’s success has been one of the most beautiful and unexpected parts of this journey. It’s a reminder that community and connection can be just as important as hard work and hustle. I’m so full of love and gratitude for these people, and I hope to be that same source of strength and encouragement for others as I continue to grow.
