We had the good fortune of connecting with Cathy Lauderbaugh and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Cathy, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I founded Dynamic Therapy Services (DTS) with the passionate belief that families and children of all backgrounds and abilities deserve the best therapies available. After working as a speech therapist in the Boulder-Denver community for a decade, I grew frustrated with the limited amount of resources available to families who were seeking high quality therapy services for their children. There is a significant body of research that shows movement-based approaches and family coaching are critical components for a child’s success in therapy. Unfortunately, insurance often does not pay for models that emphasize movement and the family! I started DTS to be a part of systemic change with what our society understands effective therapy to be: children learn through play and movement, and the family matters. DTS supports families-in-need and the local, small business providers who are passionate and highly skilled at their work.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I started my private practice (Creative Strategies Therapy) as a speech therapist in 2012, when I began using movement, the outdoors, and family-coaching to support children and families. I have always been passionate about my work and learning from others. In many ways, looking back, I have always loved connecting with people and forming genuine relationships, which I think has contributed to my success in private practice, and definitely a main catalyst in starting Dynamic Therapy Services.
DTS is my way of giving back to the community and creating more inclusion for the voices in our world who are often overlooked.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If someone were here to visit me, I would want them to get outdoors and experience everything that the Boulder-Denver area has to offer. I would take them on some smaller local hikes, with perhaps a few breweries thrown in. One of my favorite trips was a back packing trip to Odessa Lake in Rocky Mountain National Park.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
DTS has been made possible by all of the children and families with whom I have worked over the years; I have learned so much from each of them. They have taught me how to listen to the people I am trying to help, and I wanted to increase the voice of these individuals with disabilities in our community.
I want to thank the 4 fabulous people who sit on the DTS Board with me: they have tirelessly donated their time and energy to support the DTS cause. Our board consists of two amazing parents of children with special needs, one self-advocate (an adult who identifies as part of the disability community and received therapy services as a child), and one community supporter who believes in the power of therapies in natural settings. We also have an incredible administration assistant and marketing support person who both donate most of their time.
DTS would not be possible without any of these people.
