We had the good fortune of connecting with Chandra Brooks and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Chandra, maybe we can start at the very start – the idea – how did you come up with the idea for your business?
I had always mentored women in my community and would guide and set them up with jobs, connections or influential roles in the community. I had also won several awards and had power and influence in my city. Women wanted to know how I got there and how I did it. So I created the Powerhouse Academy which is now the Powerhouse Women. I teach women how to become powerful and influential Powerhouses in their business, life and community.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I run a coaching and consulting business that helps women become leaders in their business life and community. It’s an online platform of classes and live coaching along with opportunities to consult with me one on one. The difference between my coaching program is our focus is to start movements. We coach and consult you in building your business but also with the focus to build for a social focused purpose. Let’s not only make a profitable business but build it so we can contribute more to the community.

I’m most proud of all the women we’ve graduated from my Powerhouse Academy. Women who have created businesses and movements that are changing lives. We have women who started publishing companies, social movement consulting agencies, Diversity Equity Inclusion Consulting firms and so much more.

My road to success has not been easy. I started my business while I was still working a full time job and would fund and support the business with my income. I invested in coaches and consultants that could help me figure out the best way to set up my business and to help me work out the vision. I didn’t make money the first couple of years and almost gave up but I continued to tweak the services, invested in more coaching on clarity, sales, and marketing and finally created clear services for the clients I desired to work with. Then the sales started to roll in. It definitely was a journey.

I learned that you have to keep going even when it seems impossible and you want to give up. You have to work at it longer than you want to. Even when it seems boring and redundant, The problem is people give up way too fast and success could’ve been right around the corner.

I want people to know that I don’t have any fancy degrees, barely graduated high school and was a teen mom. If I am capable of building out a vision that changes lives. You can, too.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
In my City fo San Jose, CA. I would definitely take them to Santa Row and San Pedro Square. Both hot spots in the city for food, fun for family and friends.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to say my long time Mentor Walter Wilson. He has always seen the leadership in me and has supported me, uplifted and pushed me along this journey. He is an activist and entrepreneur just like me. I guess I modeled myself after him. We care deeply about our community and politics but truly believe in creating our own reality and wealth. It’s necessary if we want to create real change.
