We had the good fortune of connecting with Cheyenne Bradford and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Cheyenne, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
After going to photographer after photographer and not being in love with my photos, I decided that I would become the photographer that I would want to hire. I was a stay home mom that needed a creative outlet and this was it! Plus the income and flexible hours are nice too!
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
What sets me apart from others is my love for capturing the in between moments. I am obsessed with movement and natural emotion. I typically will give a prompt and let my couple interpret it in their own way making it unique to them. My favorite prompt right now is “Whisper what you last bought at the grocery store in a sexy voice” it gets a real laugh every single time and I love to hear what they bought! Haha.
I am most proud of the fact that most people look at my work and have no idea that I started my business just 8 months ago. I have worked so hard learning how to get my photos right in camera so that my editing can be cohesive throughout all of my sessions.
One of the hardest obstacles that I’m honestly still working on is word of mouth. I just recently moved to the Denver area from California, so when I started this business I knew absolutely no one. What has helped the most is learning how to market myself on social media and becoming easily searchable. I did this by investing in marketing classes from experienced photographers (Ashley Ammons Photography to be exact.) Since taking these classes 6 months ago I have grown over 800 followers on Instagram. The main lesson that i’ve learned is that there is always room to grow. Investing in your business is investing in yourself and that is the best thing you can do.
What I want the world to know is that you don’t need a reason to take photos. You don’t need to lose those “last 5 pounds,” buy new clothes or do anything else to justify why you should or should not take photos. A lot of my clients come to sessions feeling very insecure about the way they look or will photograph and I love showing them the beauty that I see in them through my images.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend was visiting the Denver, I would for sure take them to Homegrown Tap & dough for the best (Gluten free) pizza ever! We would definitely have to go sight seeing at some of my favorite places like Mt. Falcon, Bald Mountain for a beautiful sunset! If we were looking for a night on the town, I’d say stop by Union Station for a drink or two and finish up by going to a game of baseball at Coors Field or football at Empower Field at Mile High!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I have multiple people in my life that I can thank for where I am today.
I would first like to dedicate this shoutout to God. He is the one that placed the passion on my heart and opened all the doors for me to get to where I am.
Secondly, I would like to thank my mom for pushing me to pursue my passions and for always encouraging me. She always has the right words to say at the right moment and truly has been a saving grace for me and my business.
And last but not least, my husband, Cory, for being the backbone of this whole shindig. He has believed in me so much that he willingly invested our money and countless hours of sole parenting so that I could further my business. (Love you, babe!)
Starting a business is like having a baby, It takes a village!
