We had the good fortune of connecting with Chris Naranjo and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Chris, where are your from? We’d love to hear about how your background has played a role in who you are today?
I was born in Los Angeles and then at the age of 13 I moved to Santa Clarita CA my hometown, where I got most my influences and friends, I lived there till 2017. I started rapping because I loved rhymes at the age of 15, my Dad’s friends would hear me rap and then one day I got the opportunity to freestyle for my label boss and he signed me to his independent label at the age of 19, I was continously doing drugs and deteriorating , i ended up moving to Colorado in mid 2017 and now live in Pueblo CO with my wife and 2 kids. I’m a first generation American being that my mom and grandparents came from Mexico to the U.S in 1988. My grandma who everyone’s calls Ama had from a young age instilled values that follow me till today, such as loving God, working hard and never thinking you couldn’t achieve something. At a young age I wasn’t listening , by 15 i was getting arrested and doing drugs. This pattern did not stop and also became an alcoholic but by the grace of God I got sober in late 2019 .Now being sober and focused on my family there’s been a drastic change in my life. I’ve changed completely since I left California for the better ,being more focused than ever. I was on hiatus from 2017 to early 2022 and now im making music that doesn’t contain the ignorant lyrics of my past.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I think what sets me apart is that I’m one of the few hip hop artist making music without cussing and with real substance. I also am very versatile and can freestyle for hours on end. The history of hip hop is important and many youngins nowadays don’t care about it, growing up in the L.A area I met some local legends and befriended Sunspot Jonz from living legends, 2mex, my labelmate was also on Priority Records with 2pac back in the day so I’ve heard and learned alot.I’m about God, Family, Country and promoting family values in a dark world. I’m proud I launched my own label Christ Patriot Records LLC , where we sell shirts , working on selling candles , and create music. Without leaving California and eventually deciding to get sober I would probably be dead if I didnt. It was not easy but with my wife and turning my life to Christ completely in 2019 it helped me overcome the struggles. I’ve learned to not live that type of life anymore. I wasted alot of time in the studio from 2014 to 2017 doing drugs and being reckless and didn’t even have to pay for studio time since I was on the label Controlled Music Records. Now with putting all my own money into studio time, my business and marketing I’ve learned to value the connections you have. I go by Scriptz and I want to be a fresh breath of new light in music where people don’t need to hear about killing and drugs. Me and my label are here to help our local communities, spread the gospel, and be a positive influence within hip hop culture. I’ve just returned from hiatus with the lyrical change in early 2022 and have gotten way more traction and attention than I did in the 3 years in California recording and performing. I’m here for the long run and I hope to continue to bless everyone. I want everyone to know that anything is possible with God and I want people to know there is light at the end of the tunnel.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would take them to Garden of God’s then after head down to Manitou springs to show all the historic stuff. We would eat at Dat’s Italian a local restaurant there. This is where me and my wife spent our day after we got married. Lake Pueblo is fun because they are stocked up for fishing. I would want them to go off roading in my step dad’s truck in the mountains. Definitely also take them to a shooting range since we all love guns.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Yes definitely alot of people have been very supportive and I thank them for everything, shout out my wife Dominique, my labelboss Jose, my labelmate Julian Brooks ,Cody, Shawn, RIP Will who brought me to studio for first time, my step-dad Tony, my mom, Daniel Manes, Jonathan Johnson, Karen and Kevin and Out The Box Entertainment for helping me relaunch my career, Anyone can thrive, and thank you Jesus
