We had the good fortune of connecting with Christopher McKenney and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Christopher, how do you think about risk?
Risk-taking is an integral part of my artistic expression and the way I approach life in general. As a surreal artist, I believe that taking risks is essential to pushing boundaries and creating something truly unique. Throughout my career, I have taken many risks to achieve my artistic vision, often venturing into the unknown and unexplored territories of the mind. Exploring unconventional techniques is crucial to my artistic expression, and trying new and strange things like putting a bed sheet over my head during a shoot can lead to the unexpected and surreal images that convey a sense of mystery and intrigue. These risks have been both exhilarating and challenging, but they have allowed me to develop my creative voice and push the limits of my imagination.

In my personal life, I also believe that taking risks is vital to my personal growth and my development. It can be scary to step outside of one’s comfort zone, but it is only through taking risks that we can truly learn about ourselves and the world around us. Seizing opportunities, no matter how daunting they may seem, can lead to personal growth and profound experiences that shape our character and broaden our horizons, ultimately allowing us to achieve our full potential. I wouldn’t be where I am today as an artist if it wasn’t for taking a risk.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My art is a reflection of my fascination with the surreal and the mysterious of the mind, and I strive to create images that capture the enigmatic and otherworldly aspects of our world. I’m not sure what sets me apart from others but I know my unique vision and approach to photography, which involves exploring unconventional techniques and pushing the limits of my imagination has been the driving force behind what makes my art, mine.

I am most proud of the way that my art has resonated with people around the world and has allowed me to connect with so many. It has connected me with fellow artists and enthusiasts who share my passion for the surreal and unknown. I am excited about the endless possibilities of connection, creativity and self-expression that lie ahead.

Getting to where I am today professionally was not easy, and I have faced many challenges along the way. However, I have overcome these challenges through perseverance, hard work, and a willingness to take risks and explore new avenues of artistic expression.

Through my journey, I have learned the importance of staying true to my artistic vision and not compromising my creativity for the sake of popularity or commercial success. I have also learned the value of collaboration and the power of community in supporting and uplifting artists who may feel isolated or misunderstood.

Ultimately, I want the world to know that my art is a reflection of my deepest thoughts and emotions, and that I strive to create images that inspire and challenge viewers to see the world in new and unconventional ways. My story is a testament to the power of the human imagination, and I hope to inspire others to embrace their own creativity and pursue their passions with courage and conviction.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I moved to Grand Junction only 9 months ago and I have already fell in love with this area. There are so many places I would recommend. I believe there is a healing energy here. Some locations are

The Colorado National Monument: This stunning natural wonder is a must-see for anyone visiting the area. The towering red rock formations, deep canyons, and sweeping vistas are a source of inspiration and awe.

Mount Garfield: This majestic mountain offers breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape and is a perfect place to connect with the earth’s energy and recharge.

The Grand Mesa: This high-altitude plateau is a peaceful oasis and a great place to unwind and connect with nature. The area is dotted with lakes, trails, and scenic vistas that are perfect for hiking, fishing, and picnicking.

The Hot Springs: The healing waters of the local hot springs are a great way to soothe tired muscles and revitalize the body and mind. There are several hot springs in the area, each with its unique charm and atmosphere.

Elysium Tattoo Studios: The reason I moved here, a place for artists of all kinds to connect. Known for its talented artists and high-quality tattoo work. It’s a great place for artists to express themselves and a place for someone to get an amazing tattoo with a meaningful intention.

The Mesa Theater: This intimate music venue is a great place to catch local and touring bands, as well as comedy shows and other live performances.

In terms of eating and drinking, I would recommend visiting the local farmer’s market for fresh, locally sourced produce, as well as the local restaurants and cafes that specialize in organic and plant-based cuisine. Grand Junction is also home to several breweries and wineries that offer tours and tastings.

Overall, the Grand Junction area is a beautiful and healing place that offers endless opportunities for exploration, healing and self-discovery.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
As an artist, I believe that the creative process is a collaborative effort, and my success would not be possible without the support, encouragement of others. I would like to dedicate this shoutout to my family, friends, and fellow artists who have believed in me and encouraged me to pursue my passions. Their support has been instrumental in my artistic and personal development and has given me the courage to take risks and push the boundaries of my creativity.

I would also like to recognize the works of surreal artists such as Salvador Dali, Max Ernst, and René Magritte, whose groundbreaking contributions to the art world have inspired me and paved the way for my own artistic vision.

Without the inspiration love and support of the people around me I wouldn’t be me.
