We had the good fortune of connecting with Chuck Roy and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Chuck, why did you pursue a creative career?
When your jokes make an audience laugh the result is a crippling addiction to comedy. My previous career was politics, so comedy seemed like a natural alternative.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
At the start of the pandemic, Colorado Comedy Shows pivoted to online comedy shows. Right away, we donated 10% of our ticket sales to Elevating Connections, a 501(c)(3) non-profit that provides connecting events for youth separated from their siblings by foster care. Plus, we helped convert their Poetry Jam to a virtual event that raised a few thousand bucks for mobile education technology. We take a moment during every show, including corporate events and private bookings, to tell people about our 10% donation and the positive impact it has on the youth. Our comedians continue to spread the word during their shows, taking a moment out of the laughter to remind people that there are others in need. Our customers seem to love it! They keep coming back and cheering for the charity during the show. This charity works with the youth who are the ones who’ve ‘fallen through the cracks’. Together, our donations helped several young people keep their phones on, connecting them to WiFi, jobs, school and their family. We’re lucky to have found a way to generate high-quality virtual comedy shows, good laughs and charity.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Red Rocks, a good dispensary then countless breweries. I love walking this city. If you’re visiting, take a walk to the State Capitol and grab a seat on the steps at the Mile High Marker. Enjoy the view. When customers call looking for an in-person event, which we aren’t doing right now, I send them to Englewood and Brewability. The City of Englewood allows you to carry an adult beverage from one bar to the next, along with outdoor seating and heat lamps. The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Thank you to all the comedians, audience members and charity workers and others who make our virtual comedy shows the most fun thing I’ve done during the pandemic!
