We had the good fortune of connecting with Claudia Kouakou and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Claudia, do you have a favorite quote or affirmation?
My favorite quote is “you had a purpose before anyone had an opinion”. I love that quote because it reminds me to think about the reasons why I do things and what my passion truly is before I put the projections of other people. It helps me remember my “WHY” and to be true to myself.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’ve always had a creative side despite having separate career goals in counseling. I enjoy expressing myself in creative ways that originally started with writing and later progressed into content creation. I started my YouTube channel back in 2015 as a hobby to share my natural hair journey with others because I noticed the lack of representation. I used my time to share my journey and help others who may have also wanted guidance in accepting their natural hair. The content I want to make expands beyond natural hair, there are so many components to life that I would like to share as I evolve as a person. It taught me a lesson in authenticity because just being myself was good enough of a brand for me. I don’t think content creation is easy at all but it’s extremely enjoyable for me. There’s a lot of moving parts to it and I had to overcome issues with time management and also just remembering to try to stay consistent. I’m always excited to come up with new ideas and new ways to improve my content, so I’m excited for what this could bring after I graduate.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If I had a friend visiting for a week, I would definitely take them to Hashtag, a brunch place that I really love. There’s the local Taco restaurant in my neighborhood called El Patron I would definitely take them there for street tacos because I’m obsessed. I also think it would be cool to explore some trails if they were here because that’s the Colorado thing to do and if it was basketball season take him to a Nuggets game. I would also want to visit the Museum of Black Girls.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I believe support systems are everything and so I would give my shout-out to my family and friends and anyone in my life who has come along and supported me and always told me to follow my dreams. Also would like to thank the natural hair community on YouTube that inspired me to start my journey back in 2012. Inspired me to fully embrace who I am and to love it.
