We had the good fortune of connecting with Clayton Haberman and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Clayton, what habits do you feel helped you succeed?
I feel like my competitive nature and my discipline is what helped me succeed with my music business. I have a background in sports which nurtured my competitiveness. I played hockey, soccer, and tennis. I ended up winning state my senior year of High School for individuals. That really pushed my mindset and I apply those competitive habits to my music business. I’m also very consistent and disciplined. To keep my youtube channel alive, it’s incredibly important to post consistently and I must be disciplined enough to not quit.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I’m an upcoming music producer. I’m apart of a community of music producers on YouTube that post “Type Beats.” To be more specific, I title my videos something like, “Kendrick Lamar Type Beat.” I started posting year ago in December and with relentless consistency, I was able to grow my following and sell my beats to various upcoming artists. My channel is called “ClayH,” I have over 2,000 subscribers and have generated over 200,000 views. I’m not only proud of the growth of my music business, but I’m happy with the connections and relationships I now have because of it. I’m in contact with talented artists and producers, some small and some already established in the industry.
Growing a “Type Beat” channel is very challenging. You must be consistent, keep up with trends in music, and always elevate the quality of your music. What separates me from the other producers on YouTube is that I make 20 minute long instrumental albums. These long form uploads contain multiple beats with filler interludes to glue everything together. Im most proud of project “Vultures”, a full instrumental album with captivating visual edits. I’ll attach it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gVg5u7zcKFk&t=103s
I made project vultures with another producer named “Tem Ways,” he’s from Russia. This project was very challenging. We kept re-making certain parts, the editing was tedious, the file sizes were enormous, and the selling process was unexplored and unique. We ended up giving artists the option to buy the project in full for negotiation or they could buy beat leases in the project separately. Our email chain back and forth became too long so we ended up calling each other to figure everything out. The video did every well. This still is the greatest project Iv’e ever created, I’m very proud of the result.
Iv’e learned so much because of this business. Iv’e learned many sales tactics, marketing strategies, and how to produce professional music. I want the world to view my business as a professional music brand that pushes the boundaries in all aspects of music production.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Because I attend the University of Denver, we would start by getting breakfast at Jelly, a nearby brunch spot that serves delicious food. We would then head to Winter Park to ski because it’s my favorite mountain. After a day skiing, we would get Marco’s coal fired pizza because I love Neapolitan style pizza. To end the night we would go to Stadium Inn, a college bar, to end the long day.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Skyler McCoy has helped my become successful. He’s a very talented musician who can almost play every instrument. He got a scholar ship to pursue music at the University of Denver. A fun fact about him is that he has perfect pitch.
