We had the good fortune of connecting with Colette Pitcher and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Colette, we’d love for you to start things off by telling us something about your industry that we and others not in the industry might be unaware of?
Art is essential. Many people think it is a luxury. Early people found a way to draw images on caves to communicate stories. Art still has the power to transform, create controversy, and stir critical thinking. Art also creates mood in the home. Yes, it can match the sofa, but it also takes an empty wall and makes it feel something. There is an innate need for humans to create. It connects us.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Yesterday in a class I was teaching, a student said that he never saw things before he started painting. So true. Art is a venue to learn about the world. It opens eyes to nature, light and shadow, symbolism,, causes, basically everything. It is a joy to share, inspire and give meaning to life through art.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Let’s do a tour of the local area. Breakfast at the Eaton Country Club followed by watching a bronze pour at our foundry. Lunch at Elliot’s in Eaton and off to Centennial Village in Greeley to see the City as it was 100 years ago. Dinner at the Rio on the plaza in downtown with mango margaritas. A great show at the Union Colony Civic Center as evening entertainment followed by a night cap at one of the many distilleries. A good night sleep. Day 2: Head to Cheyenne. Breakfast at Little America. Drive to Medicine bow. Lunch at the hotel where Owen Wisner wrote “The Virginian”. Ride horses, view wildlife and enjoy the forest. Continue to Saratoga for some evening fly fishing and a soak in the hot springs before a great dinner at the Saratoga Lodge. Stay the night in the teepees. Breakfast at the lodge before driving south through the Rocky Mountains. Might as well go through Rocky Mountain Park and continue south. Stop along the way for meals depending on what looks good and when we arrive. Let spontaneity be the guide. Why not spend the night at the Stanley and read ghost stories during dinner? Drive through the mountains to Durango to ride the narrow gauge to Silverton. Shop and eat in Silverton before returning to the hotel where the food is great and the evening bar show is fun. Next morning head to Taos, NM for gallery shopping and authentic Mexican fare at the Apple Tree. Drive the old road through Chimayo to visit the sanctuary before finishing the day in Santa Fe at the plaza hotel. Head back north on I-25 and stop as time allows at the Great Sand Dunes, Denver, and any distractions that attract us. Home in time for cars and coffee at Centerra on a Sunday morning.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I stand on the shoulders of great artists. The masters of the past left a treasure trove of art movements and compositions to study. Living artists have collaborated in workshops, magazines, and online to share their knowledge. Manufacturers of art supplies support and educate. Locally I am surrounded by Creative Districts, patrons, students, and club members. Personally I have a spouse, friends and coworkers that are my extended family in addition to actual relatives.
