We had the good fortune of connecting with Colleen Howell and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Colleen, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
The creation of my business was sparked from my experience getting off hormonal birth control and being met with seemingly endless adverse symptoms (cystic acne, irregular and heavy, painful periods, trouble sleeping, anxiety, intense cravings, headaches and mood swings), then being gaslit and dismissed by a handful of doctors telling me my only option was to get back on hormonal birth control and that what I was experiencing is just part of being a woman. When I eventually deep dove to find answers to holistically heal myself, I realized how little we are actually taught about our own bodies, how powerful it is when we are body literate and the dangers of when we are not. It became crystal clear to me that there is a huge gap in both education and support as women navigate this seemingly treacherous world of hormone health.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I’ve learned through my own long and drawn out hormone healing journey (that didn’t have to be if I knew what I know and teach today) that this process is so much more than just the surface level nutrition and exercise approaches that saturate the space. It takes thorough mind, body and soul healing work to fully, wholly heal – to uncover somatic blockages, to rewrite disempowering narratives and to shower ourselves with unconditional love that keeps us from connecting to the truest, most thriving versions of ourselves. This is where my work differs. I am living proof, as are my clients, that a holistic approach of this nature is where the life changing, sustainable hormone healing resides. This is why I created The Cyclical Creatrix.
Getting to where I am at now in my business has certainly not been easy, but has been WELL worth it. I transitioned from working in the corporate natural foods sales world for 7 years to jumping into working for myself and building this business full time. I will say with 1000% certainly that entrepreneurship, especially when you are the product/service, is the most potent personal growth work. Everything will come up for you to face, so you face them, learn more about yourself and evolve…again and again and again.
I want the world to know that it is not normal to suffer at the hands of your hormones. Common, yes. Normal, no. We get to more deeply understand our bodies so that we can properly support them to thrive, so that we may have symptom-free cycles and live the lives we most desire, showing up as our most vibrant selves!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Hike Mt Sanitas and the 1st/2nd Flatiron, get cold-pressed juices, smoothies and/or warming elixirs at Wonder Press, walk Pearl Street, check out the Boulder bookstore on Pearl Street, get breakfast bagel sandwiches + lattes at Woodgrain, peruse the Boulder and/or Longmont Farmer’s Market, hang out at Eben G. Fine park + dip in Boulder Creek, get a healing elixir and raw dessert at Tonic Alchemy Lounge in Boulder, get a meal at Sherpa Kitchen in East Boulder, walk the trail around McIntosh Lake in Longmont, get takeout at Vegan Thai Co in Longmont, drive up to Summit County via 70 (on a weekday to avoid traffic), get lattes, baked goods and/or luscious sandwiches at Clint’s in Breckenridge, hike a high peak with an alpine lake in Summit County, indulge in the most delicious plant-based pizza at Piante in Breckenridge, paddle board in Lake Dillon, and finally rock climb, hike and play in Eldorado Canyon state park.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would attribute my success in his women’s health trajectory to some notable influences in my life – Alissa Vitti, author of Woman Code (my very first introduction to this world) and In the Flo, Dr. Jolene Brighten, author of Beyond the Pill, Layla Martin, founder of VITA and Mama Gena, author of Pussy: A Reclamation.
Also, my partner Tom who has ceaselessly supported me as I have made this career shift and built this business throughout the course of our relationship. I challenge you to find a man who now better understands women’s bodies than this guy! :’)
