We had the good fortune of connecting with Connor Murphy and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Connor, maybe we can start at the very start – the idea – how did you come up with the idea for your business?
My Lawn Maintenance business was not an overnight thought that I just jumped on all of the sudden. It took a lot of thought, previous experience, and a whirl wind of events that eventually all fell into place for me at the right time. Being a Division-1 collegiate athlete at the highest level, only one thing is on your mind, making it to the next level. Well, somewhere a long that line things changed, adulthood and family set in for me, your want to and why begin to shift. Once my eyes began to open on the life I knew I wanted to live and ultimately have, I knew things had to change. Retiring earlier than originally planned from my athletic career and moving to Colorado Springs on new ventures, I received a phone call one evening after working this hardscape, landscaping job with Fisk Lawnscapes. All of the sudden, a great opportunity to a new life was born. It was from my brother, Trent Murphy, who is a retired professional football player himself who informed me about one of his buddies having a moving sale in Buffalo, New York and was willing to give away his lawn equipment to us as he no longer had use for it. Like most people would, I booked a red-eye flight for that same night and was in Buffalo, New York the very next day. Purchasing a trailer somewhere along the way, I was smiling ear to ear hauling that load back to Colorado Springs even though I knew I had little in my wallet. Once arrived in Colorado Springs I had just enough money saved up from my previous landscaping job to purchase just enough of the missing equipment to get my trailer moving. And to completely focus on starting my company off the right way that is registered, LLC’d, and the rest of the whole nine yards that come with running a legal business. Now keep in mind, as mentioned earlier, this lawn business was a whirlwind of events that made me 100% confident in opening and fully operating Murphy’s Lawn Maintenance LLC. Without the school, work, new family life, and sport juggle from my previous college experience I would have never learned to balance my schedule. Without my degree In Communications and personal experience from doing direct door to door sales for a solar company I never would have learned advertising and social platform tactics. If it wasn’t from the previous landscaping experience, and the hours put in mowing/servicing our own acreage that my parents owned while growing up that made me ultimately comfortable and knowledgable about operating all of my own equipment. Lastly, the years of thought and mental prepartion that were all able to come out at once when I turned my full attention to owning and operating Murphy’s Lawn Maintenance LLC.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
One thing that sets Murphy’s Lawn Maintenance LLC apart from the rest of the competition around Colorado Springs is our approach to lawn service. Continually researching and practicing the most safest, healthiest, and efficient concepts for our family. We are sure to transfer that same strategy into our family owned and operated lawn maintenance business as well. It is easy to take the quick way out and create a lawn full of chemicals and wasted money. At Murphy’s Lawn Maintenance LLC we take pride in doing things as some like to call “the old fashioned way.” Although our approach may be more time costly to other company’s, it is why our customers keep returning season after season for the best results.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Being fairly new to the Denver/Colorado Springs Area, if someone from out of town came into visit I would not have a problem keeping them occupied. To the vibrant downtown noises and lights all city dwellers seek, Denver will not disappoint with creative shops, café’s & restaurants, buildings with a mix of parks, or underground niches & music awaiting to be discovered. To the still and beautiful noises of the front range Rocky Mountains that seem to never end with winding trails and streams just awaiting to be explored.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Being a successful solo owner and operator, you are never really doing it solo. I would not be able to be even writing this if it was not for my beautiful spouse Samantha, the momma of my two little blessings Bennet Ford and Guinevere Grace. She cooks all the food, answers phone calls, keeps our scheduling up to date, does most of the paperwork, and even occasionally will be seen on the job site helping out with our big projects. Also a big thanks to my own parents, for the endless support and lessons that they have provided and taught me. My big brother, Trent, where none of this would be happening if he wasn’t selfless enough to share to me the good news and help me get the ball rolling. To my spouses parents, who both reside in Colorado Springs, that was able to provide a shelter over my family’s heads when we first moved to Colorado so that we were able to “get going” and focus our full attention on starting my business and ensure my money was going where it needed to go. My thank you’s go out to all that have that have been seen in my life as it all has helped formulate my life.
