We had the good fortune of connecting with D Fritz and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi D, other than deciding to work for yourself, what else do you think played a pivotal role in your story?
The most important decision that I made for my business was knowing that I wanted to diversify the wedding industry. The wedding /elopement industry features mostly white/cis/heterosexual couples; and those aren’t the only people that get married. I knew that I wanted to provide services and visibility to the folks that are not often represented. As a member of the LGBTQIA+ community, I started there, and then branched out. I made sure that my website and social media showed every kind of person that I worked with, and every identity; to affirm that every kind of love is valid.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am a Denver-based wedding + elopement photographer. I started my business in 2018, and it has been growing steadily ever since. It was not easy, but it was so worth it. The biggest thing that I learned in the process of starting my own business, is to know when it’s time to bring in a professional! Reaching out to others in the industry, and to professional service providers (accountant, web designer, SEO, etc) has been a big reason why my business has found success. Essentially, knowing the worth in doing something yourself, and knowing when you should seek guidance from others! What I would like the world to know about River + Root Photography is simple: we are based on the foundation that every couple, every love, and every story is beautiful and deserves to be seen and heard.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Head to the mountains! Boulder is close and fantastic, and you can finish a day of hiking with a delicious meal on Pearl Street. I also enjoy Evergreen, lots of hiking/biking/etc, and a cute small town to end the day at.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to dedicate my shoutout to my partner of 5 years (and soon to be wife!), Sarah. When we started our relationship I didn’t really have any direction or goals; she saw something in me, helped me, and pushed me in all the right ways. We purchased a camera together, which re-sparked my love of photography, and was the catalyst that launched me into this business! She’s the person that supports me no matter what. Through long weeks of travel, working late into the evening, and generally being stressed, she’s always the one that reminds me that everything is worth it!
