Meet D Garrett | Visual artist, Muralist, Owner

We had the good fortune of connecting with D Garrett and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi D, let’s start by talking about what inspires you?
I am inspired by everyday life. There are simple things, little things we all take for granted. Those are the things that inspire me. Making art is a way of being, living, creating go hand in hand.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My art is really my way of communicating how I see myself and others being affected by the world around us. I think one of the things that sets me aside as an artist is that I do not limit myself to a style, or specific discipline in which to create my art, although I do paint for the most part.
The most exciting thing about art on the horizon, isn’t even really about just me or my art. We are looking at a turning point in history right now and artists will be a part of redefining art, how it is made, and what purposes it can serve beyond being monetized and marketed. We, Artists of all types and art in all forms will be the story tellers and record keepers for these unprecedented times in our history and evolution. Creativity is one of the main ways that we develop critical thinking skills, that are desperately needed right now.
To be honest my professional career as an artist and the continued success there of ( because I’m not done yet) is ever evolving just as the art and the market itself. So from a professional perspective, I am not where I’d like to be just yet. Although forward is the motion and I continue to move forward and try new things and explore ways to develop technique and skill, while maintaining my own sanctuary in my art practice. It is definitely not the easiest route to go as my approach is not as conventional as some. I view art as a way of being and living, it is not a “job” or something I do outside of myself. So for me challenges that present themselves in my art are often directly connected with some life challenges I may be facing. I apply self awareness, honesty and real action to overcome many of the challenges I face in life and as an artist.
One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is about trust. Trust in myself, my art, and the ability to communicate, create and thrive.
I am not a brand. My story is that of a human living in a world far beyond its means, practicing art, and magick in hopes of building community and connection.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I really don’t enjoy going out to spend money, or consume often. That being said, I often prefer experiences. I’d definitely take my bestie to at least one First Friday event. My first choice would be in the 40 West arts district. There are tons of galleries, studios, and art experiences available. Outside of First Fridays there are several opportunities throughout Denver to experience art in any of our local districts, galleries, studios, etc. that allow folks to keep local economy going.
My idea of going to hang out and eat somewhere includes making food in advance. Lol, a picnic I guess (I am also a chef) packing up a few art, camping, and sport supplies, and going to a spot in nature, without crowds or anything but the natural environment around us. We may also hang out with some other friends in their studios and homes. If we are going to go out for food, I do love the food truck scene that has slowly formed over the past few years. I am also a coffeehouse nerd so any time I find a good small ocal coffee place I’m happy. Mutiny comics and coffee on South Broadway is a classic. Having art or game nights, something fairly low key is always favored in my circles.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My wife Bear Murray. She deserves to be recognized for her championship, support and as a direct muse! Bear has my eternal gratitude for everything, in every way she has assisted and empowered me.
