We had the good fortune of connecting with Daniel Colson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Daniel, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
When I started making music I never really thought about the business behind it. But as I grew as an artist it was very apparent that there is tons of business behind the process of making music and performing. I guess I embraced it fully as I didn’t want financial burdens of recording studios and other aspects of making music to limit me and creating music. So I was quick to purchase equipment and develop my own home studio which allowed me to record myself as well as help other artists record. This is where I guess some of the business aspect of it came into play I also learned the networking with talent buyers and venues over the state would help me with opportunities to perform live. A lot of this never felt like much work to me as it was something that I already enjoyed to do.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I really think what sets us apart from others is the unique dynamic between the people in the group we are both from very different backgrounds but the way we create something and come together makes it a very unique sound and energy especially when we perform live on stage. There’s a tremendous amount of energy that shines through and passed on to the audience from our music and our energy which is super contagious.
I have had a lot of things that I have been proud of during my 10 plus years of making music. From seeing our name on a ticket stub for the first time to seeing our name on the Marquee to headlining local venues to also opening up for artists that I have been a fan of since I was a kid in high school and on the plane large sold out crowds at places such as the Mishawaka amphitheater and taste of Fort Collins
I think we got to where we are now with a lot of consistency always striving for a good quality product also catering to the audiences that we perform for and also coming with diverse sounds and songs that we can play for audiences that might not necessarily like hip hop music but still enjoy the music we create. I believe it has been challenging at times but some of it has been sort of luck in meeting the right people at the right time and them giving us an opportunity and us making good on those opportunities to continue a business relationship that is ultimately successful. It hasn’t been easy as we’ve changed members multiple times people moving away and other life challenges that may come up. I think as long as you stay consistent and continue pursuing what you love to do success typically should fall into place as long as you’re doing the right thing. Over the years of making music I have never felt that we are famous or have made it big and I certainly continue to act that way when I’m around people that support us I feel like I’m just a normal guy that loves making music and it’s always amazing that we have so many supporters and fans that enjoy what we do.
I guess I would want the world to know that to never judge the book by its cover as if you saw us walking down the street you would never expect we would be a hip hop group and also that hip hop isn’t always negativity and harmful to the community it can also uplift people and bring joy and inspire others to do the same.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If I was going to take him/her places to eat I would probably take them to music City Hot Chicken and The Colorado room in Fort Collins there’s some of my favorite spots to eat music City has some of the best fried chicken with dry rub seasoning found in all of Colorado. And The Colorado room has some of the best gourmet sliders and poutine you can find. Both places also have full bars so im sure we would catch a heavy buzz at either spot if not both. I would also try to bring them up to the Mishawaka amphitheater to catch a show in the Poudre canyon it’s an iconic hidden gem outdoor venue away from all cell phone services that we’ve been lucky enough to play at and it’s truly a spiritual experience getting bussed up the canyon to enjoy some amazing music out in the beautiful Colorado wilderness. I would also have to show them my mom’s art gallery Independence gallery located in downtown Loveland as it is one of the most beautiful places with some of the most talented artists I’ve ever been to.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Honestly I have always had a very Supportive family both my mom and dad have always wanted me to do whatever it is that makes me happy for that a huge thanks to them. Along with that my percussion instructor Mike Sherpa that pushed me during my High school years and after to strive for perfection and showed me that hard work would pay off. I have also been so inspired by so many other musicians and friends (Rolos Rios) just being able to work alongside so many talented individuals is always so humbling and encouraging
