We had the good fortune of connecting with Hannah Britt and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Hannah, what principle do you value most?
I value creativity, authenticity, and humor. I think that without these values as a daily practice and compass, I would feel lost in living my truth & purpose.
Creativity allows me to express my inside experiences that feel too intense & big to carry. Putting an idea on canvas or other mediums allows me to let go of some of the heaviness that life can bring us. Creating allows me to know myself better and self-exploration has always subject that has fascinated me.
Without pursuing my own authenticity I would have never found the people in my life that I consider my chosen family. In being myself I have found individuals who resonate with my true self and shared values. My practice of authenticity has led me to some of the best humans on this planet, who I am so grateful for.
Humor may be my most cherished value. Without humor I would not be where I am today as an artist, friend, teacher, musician, or human being. Most things in this world are not black or white, they are grey. We have the choice whether we want to dwell in the light or dark. Humor helps us enjoy the light in the places we are able to find it.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’ve been painting and for as long as I can remember. My mother is also an artist and I was fortunate to always have art supplies and the opportunity to create from a young age. I still have a painting I did when I was two years old.
I work with acrylic paint because of its versatility, vivid color, and dynamic nature. Color is my main source of inspiration and I enjoy applying pigment in unexpected ways. The mountains, the desert, my dreams, and my journaling practice also influence my ideas that I transform into art. I hope my artistic expression invites people to look at the world in a different way – whimsical, imaginative, and ripe with possibility and new perspectives.
When I first founded my art business “Hannah Anacrusis” I primarily sold paper products like prints and cards. I am in a transitional stage in my business where I am making the change to more sustainable products. I have been upcycling clothes and items that I thrifted, sewing them and painting on them with textile paint additive to create one of a kind, functional, Earth friendly art.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
We are lucky to live in one of the most beautiful places on Earth, with so much amazing access to wild spaces. I would make sure that we spend as much time as possible in the surrounding desert and mountains. I would also take them to visit all of the rejuvenating local hot springs to soak away all the aches and pains from exploring the area.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My partner Mark is my greatest supporter and best friend. He encourages me in all of my endeavors and goes above and beyond to help me reach my aspirations, whether it’s pursuing a master’s degree or venturing into the realm of fine art entrepreneurship.
I am primarily a self taught artist (besides one painting class in high school, thanks Mr. Ford!). I’ve been fortunate to have many artists and writers inspired my perspectives and who have become an important part of my artistic exploration over the years. To name a few: Maya Angelou, Frida Kahlo, Jeanette Walls, Salvador Dali, and RuPaul. I’ve always been drawn to the “weirdos” of the world. I use that term with endearment and deep respect.
