We had the good fortune of connecting with Daniel Powell and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Daniel, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Risk?… The biggest risk in this life is being trapped in a career that you don’t love! Some will say those same words, but more in a way of avoiding the hard work or challenging or uncomfortable circumstances that lie before them – you know forever chasing that “greener grass” on the other side of the hill. But I say it from getting a first hand glimpse ‘behind the curtain.’ My parents knew the value of loving the work that you do.

My Mom and Dad are both very well educated and smart people. My father – a chemist, and my mother – a social worker and counselor. They were both lucky enough to find work that they really enjoyed! But I think their parents’ (my grandparents) main motivation in encouraging them to go to college came down to simply making more money and having an easier life than they did coming of age in The Great Depression.

From a very young age I was always told “whatever you do, Daniel, find work that you love!” My parents were wise enough to know that your time on this earth is a collection of days, and well, what’s it all worth if you wake up every day and hate what you do for work. They saw a gap in the thinking of just pursuing a career path to make money.

So risk? It’s worth risking everything to do work that you love. That’s how I think about risk.
I’ve risked a lot to do the work of helping people share their stories. And I love waking up every morning full of passion and excitement!

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I do the amazing work of helping families document the stories of their elders – and I offer a very unique service in this space. When it comes to recording the life history of a loved one there are a lot of options on how you can go about it. You know there’s biographies, autobiographies, letters, journals, legacy videos, and audio recordings to name a few. And these are all fantastic ways to save a story! But what I offer in this space is truly unique.

My flagship product is the ‘Immersive Audio Memoir’ – it’s an audio documentary that explores the life story of a loved one – as told in their own recorded voice. But what makes Liminal Legacy Media’s Audio Memoir’s truly special are the painstakingly designed auditory “scenes” that create an immersive sense around the memories. It’s really an amazing experience. I say that there is “hearing a story” and then there is “EXPERIENCING a story!” We provide a way for your to truly EXPERIENCE the life story of your aging parents and grandparents.

And not to mention, our Immersive Audio Memoirs are enjoyable and engaging for the whole family regardless of age or reading ability. And that’s one of the core values of Liminal Legacy Media – to truly bridge the gap between generations, not merely preserve the stories for posterity.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.

Ok so I’ll keep it simple! For starters, tacos. Any good day has to start with some killer street tacos! There are many great options here in Fort Collins, CO. I keep my favorite secret taco shops close to the vest though. Ha!

After that we’d head into the mountains for a few days of backpacking and reflection in nature. But not on the popular trails. The more remote, the more isolated, the better. I’m big on reflective spaces in the wilderness and to get that you’ve got to get away from the crowds.

And to close out “the perfect trip”… after our foray into Rocky Mountain back country, we’d head to Old Town Fort Collins for hot wings, a pint of beer, and a trip to the Churn ice cream stand. That about covers it!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
First and foremost the biggest shoutout goes to my wife! She deserves SO MUCH credit and recognition. Building a business while raising kids is NOT an easy task! Bottom line I couldn’t do any of the work I’m doing without her love, support, and grit! I married well!
