We had the good fortune of connecting with Darcy Daly and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Darcy, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
After COVID hit, my mom and I had a lot more time on our hands being stuck at home… We decided it was time to find something fun and crafty we could do together along with my daughter and make some money while we were at it. We started brainstorming different products that could be customized we thought people would like and resin tumblers really sparked our interest. While researching the process on how to create custom epoxy resin tumblers, we found that we loved all the different styles of tumblers that could be designed. Each tumbler is hand crafted, and no two tumblers are exactly alike. My mom had recently retired and was able to dedicate more of her time to help with the administrative, financial and social media part of the business. This is when Altitude Tumblers was born – tumblers with attitude! We started out creating tumblers in my garage and quickly moved to both of us having tumbler production sites set up at our homes. We are always busy working on new unique tumbler designs for our current inventory which we keep up to date on our Etsy site as well as fulfilling any custom orders that come in. My daughter Ashlee has also been part of the family business and plays a huge role in the craft fairs where we set up as a vendor. We could not get through an event without her!
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I work full time as an underwriter for one of the largest financial institutions in the US. I have been with this company for over 18 years and have been fortunate to have created such a wonderful career here. I started out as a banker in a branch tucked away in a grocery store open 7-days a week. I worked my way up into branch management which I was in for several years. I moved from management into an administrative role within the Wealth Management department which provided me the opportunity to eventually move into my current underwriter role. I have been very happy working at my company for so long and hope to retire there some day. I contribute my success over the years to my hard work and dedication to continuing to grow and advance in my career.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Some of my favorite spots in Colorado – you can head west to Blackhawk and Central City. It is a beautiful drive or motorcycle ride up the mountains for a little gambling and options for yummy buffet while you are there. Estes Park is also another great option for a drive or ride to Main Street for some lunch or fresh saltwater taffy. My family and I live near the famous Buc-ee’s gas station that has finally hit Colorado and it is a must see if you are in the Northern Colorado area. Boulder is the home of the Celestial Seasonings Tea manufacturing plant, and they offer family friendly free tours and free samples. If you can snag a ticket during basketball season, it is always a fun time at Denver Nuggets game.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would love to give a shoutout to my amazing business partner, my mom, Kim Ryan. Altitude Tumblers would not be as successful as it is now without her love and passion for the business. It has been a great experience starting a business together and watching it grow over the last 4 years. We have also had so much fun spending more quality time together.
