We had the good fortune of connecting with David Champion and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi David, is there a quote or affirmation that’s meaningful to you?
“It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.” – Harry S. Truman.
To me this is a near-daily reminder of the natural tendency to choose my actions based on whether I’ll be appreciated for them, vs the intention I have to do what’s best even if someone else is acknowledged for it. Time and time again, when I’m mindful of this distinction I create a little magic in the world. And when I forget this wisdom I may do something others appreciate, but the positive feeling is fleeting and always less enjoyable than I had hoped it would be.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
At Maya, we’re helping psychedelic practitioners (therapists, guides, coaches and ceremony leaders) to demonstrate that the work they do is safe and effective.
This global body of evidence has the potential to legitimize psychedelics in therapy – a concept that would have been hard to imagine given the stigma surrounding their use even five years ago.
Psychedelics are now widely researched as some of the greatest healing instruments, for the world’s most urgent mental health disorders, such as Depression, Anxiety, PTSD, Addiction and others.
I’m most proud of the way our team has approached this complex and nuanced topic, through dialog with the community and with so much attention on the ethical implications of collecting data regarding mental health and psychedelics.
There’s a natural challenge in creating a new market, operating a startup at the frontier of a newly legal industry, and balancing the moral sensitivities of different groups within this emerging community. We do our best to be listening at all times, and every day we’re driven by the hope we can help significantly shift the paradigm of our broken mental healthcare system and help over 100 million people to heal.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
The greatest influences in my life, and which have helped me arrive where I am today, are: Architecture training, Landmark Forum education, Burning Man community, LSD & Psilocybin experiences, and my fiancé Lana!
