We had the good fortune of connecting with David Sahagun and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi David, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
My brother and I both studied architecture. We had always dreamed of working together and having more creative autonomy in our designs.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
We, like many firms nowadays, are a company that designs in the modern style, but ultimately according to the wishes of the client. We aim to incorporate sustainability into each design as well, which can mean anything from reducing the need for heating and cooling but also designing to accommodate a changing program. That said…We will always design what is best for our client. We provide our clients with several rounds of plan and budget reviews to ensure we meet project parameters.

As with most businesses, it was difficult to get going. Guillermo and I had informally planned to do our own thing one day as soon as we both were accepted into the UH College of Architecture, and after many years we decided to take the next step. It is hard, but doing what you don’t want to do is harder. Guillermo took the lead in the beginning at getting our first clients. We relied on the relationships we had built with builders over the years, any and all recommendations from former colleagues, and even some cold calling. Now, we are thrilled to be getting recommendations from past and current clients.

While we are proud of what we have accomplished so far in our firm, we are also happy we still love our chosen career: we have participated in extracurricular competitions and like to keep on trends like 3D printing construction. We are still involved with the UH College Of Architecture and have done pro bono work as a form of giving back to the community.

We are proud of our endurance and persistence in trying to find something beyond our familiar 9-5 jobs. We are excited about the future, the unknown, the opportunities to go beyond architecture and make a lasting impact on more than just ink on paper. We are still learning lessons but biggest lesson has been to always act. Action beats inaction any day when it comes to pursuing what your aspirations.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Garden of the Gods, Larimer Square, Craft Beer Tour in lower Denver, Denver Art Museum, Coors Field. Crested Butte is also nearby and it is a small town with a lot of great sight seeing, skiing, hiking, fishing spots.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Guillermo and I would not be where we are without the formation we received at the University of Houston School of Architecture. Our professors and mentors were, and continue to be, so very inspiring to us.

We recognize our families as well, without whose continued support none of this would be possible.

In the writings of Marcus Aurelius is found the sentiment of finding comfort in the uncomfortable. Although starting a business is never perfect, the Stoics have taught me (David) to be persistent .
