We had the good fortune of connecting with Dee Lucas and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dee, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
My mindset when I started my business was to create, own, and control. It was that simple. I truly believe value is a premium when control what you own and own what you control. Also, your decisions of your career is not dictated by the decisions of others.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m not really sure what sets my art apart from others, but I can say being a self-taught artist has allowed unique creativity through the trials and errors. Overall, its an honest sound from the heart.

I can honestly say that I am very proud in the sense that I started from scratch at a late period in life. From picking up my sax at the age of 28 in pursuit of learning to present day with 9 projects released worldwide is a true blessing and a gift. However, it wasn’t easy when I first started, because I worked a 9-5 while attempting work on my craft. I think overcoming any challenges came with planning and investing to the point where my brand was strong to stand on its own. Today, my business is my 9-5.

Lesson learned? I had to make sacrifices to see progress. I also learned that with avid supporters came naysayers. This is where my confidence and focus had to remain the forefront.

My message to the world is encourage everyone that its never too late to pursue your passion.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Being that I’m a ‘homebody’, the first thing I would offer to invite my friend to my home and catch-up. As for hanging out, we would probably crash cool sports bars and music venues. Atlanta offers a great deal of both.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My shoutout goes to so many people from various environments. First shoutout goes to my wife Bridgette Lucas who has always been supportive in every aspect of my career. While she may not know all the nuts and bolts that goes into shaping the music industry, she ethically understand the work and grind that must be practiced to see fruition.

From the music perspective, I can only say that I have been very blessed to have so many great musicians around me my entire career to help shape my sound and music direction.
