Meet Denise Kubler | Jewelry Designer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Denise Kubler and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Denise, why did you pursue a creative career?
I am at my happiest creating. I graduated with a Graphic Design Degree and started contract work as a designer, which became just a job, nothing glamorous like I had envisioned. I started creating and making after work as a way to destress and process the day. I played with fiber, fabric, beads, watercolors and finally met the medium that is perfect for me. Metal. Silversmithing is an extension of my soul. I feel so at home working in my studio, I get lost in time as I am focusing on soldering, shaping, hammering silver and turning them into actual pieces of unique one of a kind jewelry at the same time!
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I have been told I have a good eye for design and instinct for what is really needed in our jewelry life. My friends tell me this, so I feel I can share that observation. I have had a love for jewelry all my life. I wore bracelets over my ears when I was 4, I would say I was thinking outside the box on that one. My jewelry has an ease to it, a twist of the expected. The handmade clasps that are designed to be worn in the front as well in the back or on the side. These clasps will never make you frustrated that a photo was taken with your clasp showing. Earrings are never heavy, and rings are made for people who have a hard time finding their size because they don’t have the “average” ring size. I am trying to make jewelry accessible for people who do not feel they can find the perfect piece of jewelry, or have given up on wearing jewelry. I have had the experience of falling in love with a piece of jewelry only to be told I am not a “normal” size, or my hands are swollen. I want to make buying and wearing jewelry a fun experience from the moment they lay eyes on their favorite piece of jewelry, to when they actually can put it on, and feel joy not shame. That makes me happy. I take pride in the fact that I am able to design and create everything, including the ear wires, clasps and handmade chains, one of the few things that I buy premade are the delicate chains that hold the recycled silver pendants and other fun designs that work best on small delicate chain. I am continually growing my skills, I learned how to flush set stones which which I thinks levels up my designs and challenges me to level up my designs. I am fortunate to have my studio in my house, you could say I eat, sleep and design all day.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Depending the length of time I had with my friend, we would have to go to the mountains and experience a mountain town for the day, preferably for the weekend. Rent bikes, OK, e-bikes, because the of the altitude (LOL). We would have to walk around Boulder, Pearl Street Mall, this has always been a fun experience for me, and the Boulder Creek Trail. Definitely some cool restaurants. There has to be an afternoon spent at the Acreage, which has by far the most beautiful views, and cider. I have yet to experience a brewery tour, so I would love to plan one. Also a day being pampered at a spa. Because, adjusting to our altitude will take them a minute and pampering will help.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I do have to dedicate some of the credit to my parents, who supported my creative energy, signed me up for painting classes, and being sort of OK when I decided to become a Graphic Design and are now so proud to see me create a new life and tiny business. I love the support I get from my boys who have watched me grow my skills as a metalsmither and business along with me redesigning my life as a single mom. I love having professional friends, we support each other’s wins and struggles. My close friends who have watch me grow my design world from knitting baby sweaters to designing and handcrafting sterling silver jewelry. I also have to add my customers, who fell in love with my designs, I would not be here without out them. So grateful for this opportunity and thank you for readeing to my story. I am still just getting started!
