We had the good fortune of connecting with Devon Hamilton and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Devon, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
My mom owned her own business throughout my childhood and into my adult years. It was inspiring to watch her grow & be so independent & successful. I wanted to build something of my own & be able to build it from the ground up. I loved being able to put my personality & my energy into my space & watch my dreams become a reality. The idea of being able to spend more time traveling, and be able to have more of a balance with my time also really intrigued me when I opened my own business.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I own Sun & Moon Studio in Colorado Springs: a private hair studio that specializes in color & cutting. I have been doing hair for a little over 2 years. My mom was an independent hairstylist for most of my childhood & into my adulthood. I loved the freedom that came with being independent, and being able to create a space of my own. I took a tour of a Sola suite & walked into, my now, suite & immediately felt like I was home, I could envision my business before it even began. I would stay on FaceTime for hours with my suite partner, and we would discuss all the details of the business we dreamt of. It went from random notes in a notebook to now being my dream every single day.
Opening a business only 2 years into my career was a big leap. It was not easy, but I trusted myself at every step & knew that I could do this. I was ready to put in the work & do everything I had ever dreamt of. I knew if I kept going & reminded myself exactly what I was chasing, that I could make it, & I know I would never turn back.
I have learned so much about myself in this journey. I have always had a lot of self-discipline & drive, but this has shown me even more potential that I have in my career. I have learned what my goals & values are in this next chapter of my life, too.
My studio is a safe place. I want every person that comes in to my space to feel the space to relax & enjoy their time & come as they are!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
All good days start with coffee! I love going to local coffee shops & trying out new drinks. I love hiking & being outside, so there would definitely be some hikes involved. Gold camp road area, and Pulpit Rock are 2 of my favorite places to adventure around. Driving through Garden of the Gods is always a bucket list thing to do for my friends & family who are visiting. I really enjoy walking through Manitou Springs & checking out the little shops and enjoying the Colorado sunshine. I am really into thrifting, and I have several favorite thrift store locations I like to check out too! When I have the chance, I love visiting the Glenwood Springs area. Hiking & then doing a hot spring is one of my favorite things to do. When I am not able to get to Glenwood, Sun Water Spa in Manitou is great too! I love riding scooters & biking around the Springs too.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My mom & sister have always been right by my side. For as long as I can remember, it has always been the 3 of us together. They are my inspiration, my support system, and my motivators to always keep going. I have no idea who I would be without them.
My dad has always been my number 1 supporter. He has always reminded me that I can do whatever I set my mind to, and that he would always be in my corner no matter what. I love being able to share my accomplishments with him & see how proud he is.
My partner has always been very supportive of my dreams & been a big support system for me in all of my trials & tribulations.
I used to watch one of my mentors do hair & it wasn’t really until I saw her creativity that I thought hair could be possible for me. I am lucky enough to now call her a friend & work alongside her & watch her dreams play out too.
