We had the good fortune of connecting with Devon Martin and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Devon, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I worked in the oil and gas industry for over a decade. I got into oil and gas shortly after my father passed away at the age of 19. Starting my own business and getting into real estate was really an easy decision for me. While in oil and gas, I lacked purpose. Since starting my business, I have truly helped people in a way that fills my cup. Real estate is also something I am passionate about. I love showing homes, marketing homes, and seeing client’s smiles at the closing table knowing they had someone that truly cared about them. Real estate has also provided me with a life I didn’t know was possible. Before, I’d work 12-16 hour shifts for days, sometimes weeks, at a time including holidays. I didn’t have time for family, friends, hobbies or even myself. Present day is the complete opposite! I get to spend time with my family, have dinner with my wife, go to social events, even gave me the time to get back into sports by taking a high school football coaching position! Oil and gas provided financial stability, however Real Estate has provided me with a much better quality of life and has drastically improved both my physical and mental health. I wish I would have took the leap of faith sooner!
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I started my Real Estate business in March of 2022, right when interest rates started to climb rapidly. This was very concerning for me, being new to the industry and not having steady business. I took advantage of this time by taking as many classes as I could. If I didn’t have the business coming in, I wanted to spend that time learning about anything and everything Real Estate related. I also learned how to hustle and operate in a market which isn’t necessarily agent friendly. These first couple years have been challenging, but I am thankful for the lessons I have learned as well as some of the tips, tricks and strategies needed to survive in this current market. Through hard work and dedication, I earned Rookie of the Year my first full year in Real Estate! The thing that sets me apart is the fact that I am not transaction driven, I am relationship driven. I thoroughly enjoy building meaningful relationships with my clients and taking care of them throughout their real estate transactions. I get personally invested in each client that I have, so much so that I treat their transaction as if it were my very own. I care about all of the people I work with and work for, operating with integrity and finding solutions that aren’t always in black and white. My office thought so highly of me that they invited me to be part of their leadership team after 7 months of working there. Holding myself to a high standard and building a business on being a good person has helped me propel myself to where I am today.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
You can’t come to Colorado without visiting the mountains, regardless of the season. I absolutely love Glenwood Springs, Breckenridge and Vail. The hot springs in Glenwood is a must! I’d also take them to a local sporting event, Avalanche, Broncos or Nuggets! I’d try and schedule a concert or show at red rocks as well! As far as food and drink, there are way too many places to choose from in the Denver area. Uche would be my recommendation as it is my personal favorite but I am open to trying new spots!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My wife! Her and I started dating while I was still working in oil and gas. She saw what that schedule was doing to me, and to us. She could see the exhaustion and unhappiness in me. One day she mustered up the courage to ask some tough questions relating to my career choice and the future projection of our lives together. She is a successful entrepreneur herself, and opened my eyes to the possibility of switching things up. She was the motivation behind me spending the little days I had off in our home office completing my real estate licensing class. Once my license went active, she supported me in my decision to quit my job and jump into real estate head first! She has been an excellent mentor, helping me navigate the waves of being a new entrepreneur. She has also helped me build my brand to what it is today, and will continue to help me grow. Her unwavering support and encouragement is something I truly am grateful for!
