We had the good fortune of connecting with Devyn Pelter and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Devyn, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I was going out of town on short notice after having my pet rabbit for a year. I called a few vets around town and found that none boarded rabbits. I ended up taking my rabbit with me to a hotel. My rabbit found a vent that he was able to pry loose and ended up in the wall. After this fiasco, I realized that other rabbit owners must be in the same position when going out of town, so I decided to start my own hotel for rabbits.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
When I initially became a rabbit owner, I had no idea how challenging finding care could be. Finding an appropriate vet, especially during an emergency, can also be very difficult. I help bunnies and their owners, not only while they are staying with me, but also when they return home. My goal is to be an advocate for rabbits and their owners.

I took rabbit first aid classes at the Rocky Mountain House Rabbit Rescue and am featured on their website as a rabbit sitter. I can administer medications when required and perform the bunny heimlich maneuver in an emergency.

Initially, I had very few clients. I started advertising on social media in bunny specific groups and word of mouth spread. Most people were thrilled to have an actual “bunny person” watching their bunny. I get pretty busy during the holidays. I don’t have family in the state so having bunnies in the house makes the holidays so much better!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Denver has the best art. I would definitely recommend the Denver Art Museum along with First Friday on Santa Fe. I love La Loma but food trucks and breweries are great too. I would end our vacation at Strawberry Hot Springs in Steamboat Springs.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Rocky Mountain House Rabbit Rescue and Rabbit Track Trail Rescue have been great resources to me and fellow bunny owners all over Colorado!
