We had the good fortune of connecting with Dominque Robbins and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dominque, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I’ve always wanted to have my own studio, but it all came down to when and where. So putting forth the work behind the scenes it took some years, but I finally made my dream come true.
What should our readers know about your business?
My company Art Matters Productions is the first arts and entertainment production company and professional recording studio in Rocky Ford, Colorado. We opened our physical building in February of 2022, but Art Matters has been acting as a record label for myself since 2017.
What sets us apart from others is that we offer more services than your average recording studio. I have had to be almost everything for myself, from producing beats all the way to engineering my own sound for shows so being able to now offer those services to others who may not have those skills is something I am proud of, plus I didn’t want to be a one trick pony.
Art Matters has seen some challenges since opening, but I think the biggest was getting the community to accept and support. Marketing is great, but that doesn’t always mean physical people in the seats or at events. You have to show what you can do and what you have to offer that isn’t already there, and I think we are doing that one step and one event at a time.
This has not been easy and I am learning every single day from my husband who is also a business owner and from others around me who are successful at what they do. So I guess the lesson is you should only want to be around people who are where you want to be so that you can learn from them, apply what you learn, and grow.
I want the world to know that a new day has begun in the Arkansas Valley Area of Colorado, and it is starting with Art Matters Productions!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Interesting question lol. Honestly when I am in Denver because that’s where I typically hang out when I’m not home, I would take them to the nature and science museum, the art museum or Meow Wolf, and to a cool show at either the Fox Theater or at the Buell Theater. As far as food I’d take them to City O’ City, 5280, View house, or even Pappadeaux.
Now if they were to come to the Rocky Ford La Junta areas I would take them out to Mas Que Tacos, Rock House Bar and Grill, Bamboo Panda or the Asian Cafe. Then we would drive around or catch a show at Picket wire theater in La Junta.
I’m a nerd so going to any of the places I mentioned is always a good idea with me, but I’m open to other possibilities, and honestly I’m a bit of an introvert when I’m not on stage or wanting to be out.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to dedicate this first to God, second my grandmother who raised me, to my husband who continues to support my dreams, to my cousin Evette who is like a manager and therapist to me lol, and to my close friends and family that always show love and support!
