We had the good fortune of connecting with Don Scott Macdonald and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Don Scott, what’s one piece of conventional advice that you disagree with?
‘Work hard and you’ll succeed!’ I’ve worked hard at being an artist, but it wasn’t until I worked smart that I became successful at it. Working smart means being in communication with others who’ve had success, being resourceful, and learning from mistakes along the way rather than repeating them. I can work hard, but also working smart is the way to success.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My deepest admiration goes to those who can communicate simply and effectively. Good art does that. Hopefully MY art does that. So, I had a band in Los Angeles back in the day, and during a rehearsal there was an accident and I lost most of my hearing in both ears. Communication on a phone or even in person is a challenge. Is this why I have reverence for those folks who are incredible authors or diplomats or friends, whose ideas are told effectively?
My creative urge went into a new direction, painting. I’ve worked to create metaphors of the beauty in nature and how we feel. Beauty, mystery, darkness, hope.
My patrons over the years have each found something that communicates one of these stories.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
The mountains are what we are about, they inspire me and my friends, so I like them right in my face…I’d have to show them some of the ‘view’ bars and eateries like 54Thirty, El Five, Fire, and Linger. And then I’d juxtapose that with some creole at Nola Voodoo!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Working as a fine art oil painter is typically an ‘alone’ experience throughout the day. But I want to give a shoutout to the person who has helped me on the business side, helping with promotion, helping gather collectors of my work, and much more. She is awesome. So I married her! Her name is Debra Lamfers.
