We had the good fortune of connecting with Alicia Adams and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Alicia, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
My husband and I moved to the Hudson Valley with our then 3 young children and began breeding alpacas on a farm. Every May we shear the alpacas. 17 years ago, I didn’t really know what to do with the fiber as it had been a by-product of our breeding operation. It was only when the kids began pre-school in 2009 that I started experimenting with the alpaca fiber and learning more about how fabulous this particular wool is. I learned from local spinners, weavers, and knitters. I then finally designed my first pair of baby booties and a baby hat, followed by a throw and a women’s cape.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Alicia Adams Alpaca is our family-owned business and a pioneer in the alpaca high fashion industry. Alpaca wool is one of the rarest and most luxurious materials because of its natural and exclusive fibers that are undeniably warm, water-resistant, hypoallergenic, and soft like silk. We raise and manage a herd of over 200 Suri alpacas at a beautiful farm in New York’s Hudson Valley. Alicia Adams Alpaca is truly where high-end fashion and home decor meet sustainability.

Moving far from home while learning the ropes of parenting and also building a brand was not easy, and we couldn’t have done it without the amazing support of our family and friends.

In 2013, Alicia Adams Alpaca received an order that made all the hard work worth it. The Obamas gifted Prince George a Classic Herringbone Throw in ice blue and a Classic Herringbone Throw in hot pink for Princess Charlotte. This has since been on display in a royal exhibit inside Buckingham Palace. It was an honor to be given the opportunity to personally specialize these blankets for the Prince and Princess of Wales.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
A trip to Aspen, CO is always a good idea! Of course, we recommend a visit to our Aspen Lifestyle Store to see what’s new in our collection – we have something for everyone, winter or summer, day or night! While you’re in the area, you can grab a coffee at Gorsuch Ski Café, a delicious meal at Casa Tua Aspen, and then head over to the Aspen Mountain Ski Resort for outdoor fun.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My husband, Daniel Adams, truly believed in me and encouraged me to launch the brand. My family and friends were always amazing supporters of our newest adventure and became instant fans of the Alicia Adams Alpaca brand.

I’d also love to give a shoutout to Trees for the Future, Angels of Light, and the American Cancer Society. We love these organizations and do what we can to give back to them for the amazing work they do for others.
