We had the good fortune of connecting with Dr. Anna Towne and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dr. Anna, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I know how it feels to start getting restless at 3 weeks postpartum because you miss running and working out…I get it….because I’ve been there a couple times. And that’s why I created the rehab programs for moms!
Before I became a Pelvic Floor PT I asked the same questions like “How can I get my core strong again?” and “How can I get back to running safely?”
That’s when I dove head first from Sports Medicine Physical Therapy into the Women’s Health & Pelvic Floor Specialty, with focus on pregnancy and postpartum exercise.
I started seeing what a HUGE need there was for a comprehensive rehab program that was accessible for all moms to do from home. And that helped all moms return to running and activity safely and with confidence.
I work with hundreds of moms in the PT clinic symptoms and pain in motherhood so I take all my clinical experience to make this program focused on injury prevention for moms.
Because if they build a strong core and pelvic floor foundation in postpartum then that can save their bodies, save thousands of dollars and save months/years of treatments, surgeries, etc..
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Strong Core Mama is virtual postpartum rehab programs for moms to be able to easily access at home. I wanted to eliminate all barriers of moms not being able to access postpartum rehab- childcare, drive time, work schedule, feeding baby, etc.
The rehab classes are completely different from exercise classes or from youtube videos/google search exercises that you will find online.
When I teach group exercise classes at the local gyms I teach at in Fort Collins, I’m thinking about the choreography, the music and I’m watching their form but it’s more of a high repetition type class and there is not enough time to hone in on every single participant’s mechanics.
But with the virtual rehab programs it is all physical therapy exercises so they’re very slow and intentional movements. I’m giving cues the entire time and I’m telling you what to feel and what not to feel. If you are feeling the wrong thing then I will be educating you on what you can do so you in order that you can use the right muscles and not compensate. It’s a lot of corrective exercises specifically targeting common mom weaknesses and imbalances that I see all the time in the PT clinic.
Each class incorporates an education piece on the core, pelvic floor anatomy and physiology and how it all works together. I guide moms through how to heal their diastasis recti, back pain/sciatica, pelvic floor symptoms etc.
I want all moms to know that they don’t have to accept leaking, or back pain, or core weakness, etc. as their new “normal” in motherhood. They CAN heal if they’re able to do the right corrective rehab exercises!
I think the main one being that I am a mama runner/triathlete and I race with Athletes in Tandem, adults with disabilities. So for me after having my babies it was really important for me to get back to running and activity pain-free and symptom-free. This is one of the main reasons I wanted to get into the Prenatal/Postpartum womens’ health world…is to help moms get back to what they love without issues!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I have a total outdoorsy family so I would definitely pack up my kids and all our hiking gear up and then we’d go somewhere in the mountains. I like to hike with our kids in the hiking packs, or bike with them in the trailer, XC ski with them in a trailer behind us, or run with them in the double stroller. We are pretty much ALWAYS outside…rain, snow or sunshine.
And we pack ALL the snacks. It’s amazing how much my 2 & 4 year old can eat while we’re out on the trails!
Also, if there was a local race happening then I would take them to go watch that! The PT clinic I work at sponsors as lot of races in NOCO and they’re such great events. I am a mama runner and triathlete and I race with Athletes in Tandem, adults with disabilities. I have competed in 50 races with AIT in the last 9 years because I am so passionate about this local nonprofit!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to give a shoutout to Athletes in Tandem, a nonprofit based out of Fort Collins. I am a mama runner and triathlete and I race with Athletes in Tandem, adults with disabilities. I have competed in 50 races with AIT in the last 9 years because I am so passionate about this local nonprofit!
They have been one of my big motivations to returning to racing after both of my babies. So for me after having my babies it was really important for me to get back to running and activity pain-free and symptom-free. My Athletes in Tandem friends have supported me in my career as a Physical Therapist and they have brought so much added joy to my life!
