We had the good fortune of connecting with Dr. Jocelyn Brown and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dr. Jocelyn, is your business focused on helping the community? If so, how?
When Covid hit us in 2020 and senior programs shut down, my 86 year old mother who was in the third stage of dementia became restless and bored. Although we spent a great deal of time together — I had temporarily closed down my home and moved in with her — she needed more creative engagement. She had lost the ability to communicate well verbally and 24/7 companionship, as helpful as it was, didn’t fully meet her need for activity. Music, singing, dance, and exercise kept her from falling into a state of quiet withdrawal. I saw how necessary this engagement was for her and for so many of her peers — friends and neighbors living with dementia, Parkinson’s, or just living alone and wanting more engagement in their lives on a regular basis. This was the catalyst for the Silver Wings Arts Program. In the words of Arthur Schopenhauer, “The two enemies of human happiness are pain and boredom.”

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I’m excited to share the Silver Wings Arts Program with the community. It is a unique day program that offers a broad range of engaging workshops in art, music, and movement for adults. The mission is to provide a non-academic platform for individuals to immerse themselves in creative projects that give their lives meaning and purpose. The philosophy behind the Silver Wings Arts Program is enjoyment of life doesn’t have to end because we have physical or mental limitations. The specialty component to the program is the basic caregiving oversights that are provided, if needed. If medication reminders, light mobility assistance, and memory reminders are concerns throughout the day, these services are provided through certified training in advanced caregiving, assisted living management, and dementia care.
Building the program was a slow 5 year process, hampered by the need to provide 24/7 care for my mother. Working in the wee hours of the morning on the website, networking, and advertising between bed checks definitely took a toll on sleep and health. My dedication to the idea of providing a viable outlet for meaningful adult engagement outranked my exhaustion. There were many trials and errors. I was fortunate enough to be mentored by the nonprofit agency, SCORE, which works with small businesses. When my mother passed away in March 2025, my dedication grew as I made the promise to keep the program alive in memory of her life.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would say the cozy town of Louisville with it’s quaint eateries and shops and close-knit community is the place to visit. LuLu’s has the best “Loaded Baked Potato,” smothered in sour cream, cheese, and bacon.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I have received so much support and education from the various agencies and civic organizations in Boulder County, such as the Alzheimer’s Association, the BCAAA, and the Age Well Centers, along with key individuals in the community. I wish to extend my gratitude to all. Most importantly, I want to dedicate this shoutout to my mother, Dr. Mildred Brown, who allowed me to care for her all these years, reshaped my perspective on aging well.
