We had the good fortune of connecting with Dr. Tess Carroll-keeley and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dr. Tess, can you talk to us a bit about the social impact of your business?
Emily Dickinson has a quote that I’ve loved since I was a little girl: “If I can stop one heart from breaking, I shall not live in vain.” My hope is that therapy with me provides understanding, comfort, and direction for folks who are working to make sense of their past experiences, and to help them clarify what they want for their lives moving forward. Often, it can feel overwhelming to consider how to make a difference in your community and the world. There’s so much, and so many people, who need support! In my opinion, micro-moments of sitting and connecting with another person, and really listening to their experiences, is how I can best serve my community.

What should our readers know about your business?
Portico Psychology, LLC is a private practice catered to individuals and couples who want to grow their relationship with themselves, and with important others. A portico is a term for a covered porch structure that leads to other entrances within a larger structure. I loved the image of a portico when I was building a therapy practice and deciding on a name, because so many folks enter into therapy when they are in a transitional space themselves. Whether you’re navigating a new relationship, as death or loss of a relationship, a new identity (in career or parenthood), or simply working to better understand a pattern that may no longer be serving you-Portico is here to help you navigate that transitional space.

I like to think my relational stance helps clients feel really known and understood. I love incorporating metaphor, humor, and narrative into the therapy experience.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I absolutely love the Denver Botanic Gardens-an oasis in the middle of the city. Every season offers something new to explore at the Gardens!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
So many folks deserve recognition in getting me to where I am today. But my husband has been with me every step of the way in getting accepted to graduate school, moving across the country, trekking through grad school, and starting my own business!
