We had the good fortune of connecting with Elizabeth Andersen and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Elizabeth, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I have been working in Digital Marketing for over 10 years, on in-house teams and in agencies for businesses of all sizes. In one of the agencies I worked for, I came across so many businesses that were ready to take their business to the next level and when we started working with them, we would realize quickly that they didn’t have a solid foundation to grow on. So we would essentially have to go back to the basics, clarify their strategy and rebuild their online foundation. It was heartbreaking to see how many small business owners had invested in their website and some marketing only to realize they still weren’t set up properly for growth. When I started my agency, my goal was to help business owners get crystal clear on their brand and marketing strategy, and to build them a solid foundation from which they could take control of their growth.

What should our readers know about your business?
My agency, Counterpart Strategies, helps owners and teams of small and mid-size business develop a brand full of substance and soul.

Brand strategy is not just for the fortune 500 companies. In a marketplace that is oversaturated with options in just about every category, a clear brand strategy is more important than ever. All of your marketing efforts depend on this clarity in order to be successful.

Individually and as part of highly skilled teams of experts, I have been helping companies of all sizes, from bootstrap start-ups to Fortune 500s, develop effective brand and web strategies for over a decade. Starting and running my own business has by far been the biggest challenge in my career, but it has also been the most rewarding. My business growth has been intimately tied to my own personal growth. I have had to evolve my mindsets and evolve as a leader. All of which is absolutely an ongoing process. Having supportive people around me and learning to ask for help have been so important in overcoming the challenges along the way.

My favorite part of what I do is that I get to work with ambitious business leaders who are looking to make the world a better place with their talents and skills. I love when lightbulbs go off in our strategy sessions, when the insights, process, clarity, and courage to build a strong brand. I take my clients on a Brand Strategy Expedition that helps them escape mediocrity and build an extraordinary business (and life). Through a series of creative workshops and deep research, my clients come out the other side astonished at what they and their business have accomplished. They are proud of the process and the product – and most importantly, themselves. My clients and their entire team feels clear, excited, determined, energized, and motivated to continue growing their business with a solid foundation to build upon.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I have been so fortunate to have a wealth of people encourage and build me up to believe that I could start and succeed at building this business or at whatever dream I wanted to chase. There are really too many to name, but in particular I would first thank my husband, who has unwavering confidence in me and is constantly speaking encouragement and belief into me and my goals. He has been a massive supporter of my endeavors. I also would thank all of my friends, my parents, and my sister, many of whom are business owners and bosses in their own respect, and who have not only set an example, but encouraged me to go after my dreams as well. Furthermore, I’m grateful for the number of leaders that I’ve come across in my career who saw something in me and spoke that belief and encouragement into my life. They helped me to believe that I could be and do more than I even dreamed at the time. I make a point of surrounding myself with people who are more successful than I am and I learn from them. I see the steps to success that they take, the challenges they push through and I’m inspired by them. As for books, I can’t even count how many I’ve read that have helped me in one regard or another. However, one of the first business books I ever read was “How I Raised Myself from Failure to Success in Selling” by Frank Betger. Early in my career, I was working for a software startup, wearing many hats, including sales and business development and a business partner recommended it to me. I think the mindsets and principles shared in that book set the tone for the rest of my career.
