Meet Elvis Sherman

We had the good fortune of connecting with Elvis Sherman and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Elvis, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Starting your own business can be a scary proposition, for sure. When I decided to start my own headshot photography business I knew I wanted to keep it simple, give people what they wanted, and of course keep my expenses down. I knew I already had most of the gear necessary to get the business going, so it was just a matter of thinking it through and getting it started.
There are also tons of procedural questions that come up along the way for booking clients, delivering what I promise, coming up with solid options for clients, and so much more. It can be overwhelming to get things off the ground, but you really just have to take things one at a time and remain flexible. There will always be things that you did not expect, so it’s really a never ending process.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I started taking photographs when digital photography really took off, sometime in 2000 or 2001. Film photography never appealed to me for some reason, but when digital photos started appearing everywhere I was fascinated. You could take tons of photos, learn from your mistakes, and delete the ones you didn’t like without spending a nickel on film!
I started the same as most people I’m sure, which was taking landscape photos when going on trips or vacations. It evolved for me over the years with landscape, night photography, and macro photos. I never thought I would enjoy taking photographs of people, let alone photos they need for their professional careers. I have to say that I get the most pleasure out of helping people look better than they thought they would, giving them a photograph that represents the best version of themselves.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would want a person to get a good feel for the city as well as the outdoors that Denver is known for. A trip downtown to see the State Capital and surrounding buildings would be on the list, as well as getting a bite to eat at the newly remodeled Casa Bonita.
If I wanted someone to get a feel for the outdoors without going too far from town then I would recommend Roxborough State Park. Chatfield Reservoir or Cherry Creek Reservoir are nice spots if you want something around the water.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Instead of naming a certain person or a couple of people, I would like to thank everyone who encouraged me to start my own business. I had heard for years that I should “do my own thing” in photography. I always ended up taking people’s professional photos at various companies I worked for over the years, and I finally took the plunge! So to everyone who kept nudging me along, thank you!

Elvis Sherman, I took all the photos myself. The collage photo is a bunch of headshots I’ve taken of people within the last year or so. I have signed model releases for all the people in the collage.
