We had the good fortune of connecting with Emily Gold and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Emily, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
My business encompasses both my baking and art. In both, I have ultimate control over the product. I have high standards and would not sell something that doesn’t meet those standards. As a sole proprietor, I want to make sure that everything that has my name on it is the best that I can make.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Like many people in creative fields, I have forged my own way. I did attend art school many years ago, but I don’t feel like I was making the art that really felt like me until recently. I have finally leaned into my unique style of collage and techniques that I’ve developed for myself. It was the same way with baking – I learned what interested me, and spent time practicing those skills. I truly love baking and making collages, and I think my joy draws others in.

The most important lesson I’ve learned, which seems exceedingly basic, is to make something every day. A daily practice is where the magic happens.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Vermont is a gorgeous state at any time of year! We would have to spend time outside in my neighborhood, which is in a picturesque valley – either walking or hiking, or if there was snow on the ground, snowshoeing. Even though I live in a very rural area, we could visit amazing museums. The Clark has art by the masters and the prettiest natural setting, and MASS MoCA has new and ground breaking art in their expansive galleries. There is also a museum at Williams College, WCMA, which is excellent, and a very sweet local museum, the Bennington Museum, with changing shows. For food, we’d have to get farm fresh produce from Wildstone Farm or True Love Farm to make the best local dinner at home, served with Consider Bardwell cheeses. I would serve my super fudgy brownies and sea salt chocolate chip cookies for dessert, paired with the most delicious Chocolate Barn ice cream!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
While I could credit lots of people in my life with endless love and support (hi to my family and friends!), I am inspired to keep doing what I’m doing for my community. I have the pleasure of being a long time vendor at the Bennington Farmers’ Market, where I sell my baked goods and art weekly. Seeing and talking to my customers is such a vital part of what I do. I become connected to their lives through their visits, and I gain valuable feedback about my work. It feels good to feel connected and valued by my neighbors and community members.
