We had the good fortune of connecting with Eric Nelson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Eric, do you have a budget? how do you think about personal finances?
Absolutely. One thing my wife and I agree on is that we care much more about experiences than things. The thing we spend the most money on is travel. Whether it is a simple weekend getaway, or we are spending a month in Mexico with our family this year- that is where we want to spend. We live in a small home, we like to live simply. I drive a 10 year old work truck, but we spend on vacations, and time on new experiences. So, the biggest bucket in our budget is the one we feel we gain the most, and enjoy the most.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I own a few, but the newest, and most exciting is Wild Oak Capital. We purchase apartment buildings, and bring people together to purchase them. So, it is a passive investment for people, and they get to own a portion of a building. We say we are “people first”, so we improve the property- giving tenants a better place to live, while us as owners get to make money creating a better living environment. The investments are usually great returns, and have lots of tax benefits as well. It is a win-win-win.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I live in Durango. So, it depends on the time of year. In summer, I would take them rafting, then hiking up high. We would spend a day in Telluride, ride the gondola, hike to a waterfall, and grab a dinner and drink in town. Then, we would head back to Durango and hit the lake for a paddleboard day, great drink in town, and dinner at a favorite restaurant.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My mentor Jens Nielsen. I have been working with him for several years, and he helped me takes leaps, open my mind and get out of my comfort zone.
