We had the good fortune of connecting with Ericka List and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ericka, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Sometimes it just starts by taking that first step. I started out as a landscape and abstract photographer. If you mess up, you just take another shot. It’s no stress, because it’s just about getting out there and being in the moment and hopefully capturing the magic. I was fairly nervous when I started doing portrait photography beyond just family. My very first portrait session was for another photographer and I was afraid they weren’t going to be up to her standards, but she loved them. I think the biggest risk is really just being afraid to try something new.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m a veteran of the Air Force and Space Force, and recently retired after 25 years of service. The military taught me a lot of things, but also gave me opportunities to travel and meet some pretty fantastic people. I got into photography due to the encouragement of friends who were in the military, but also photographers.
The biggest lessons I’ve learned, are never give up and always be kind. In any field, people are going to say no, and that’s ok. Maybe they will remember your name for next opportunity that comes up. In life you have the opportunity to be someone’s rain, or their rainbow, choose wisely.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I absolutely love food! When friends or family visit, my favorite place to go for breakfast is Nana’s Kitchen in Falcon, and dinner is Four by Brother Luck in Colorado Springs.
It’s fun to take them to Old Colorado City to see the beautiful murals, or hiking at the Paint Mines in Calhan to see the amazing rock formations.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I owe my success to the support and encouragement of my family and friends. My sons have been asked to model for random themes and while I’m sure they would’ve rather been doing something else, they jumped right in. I also owe a big thank you to the modeling and photography communities for teaching me new things, coming up with fun concepts, and bringing all the energy to the shoot.
