We had the good fortune of connecting with Erin Mullane and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Erin, every day, we about how much execution matters, but we think ideas matter as well. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
One of my various endeavors is being the owner Velvet Void Creations. Creating unique, 18+ , alternative home décor. As well as teaching craft classes in the Denver metro area.
I originally taught myself how to knit in college, and that journey perked my interest in fiber arts. So then I thought myself to crochet, then needle felting, and macramé, and so on. I toiled with my art as a hobby for over 14 years, but when I was let go from my job 3 years ago I realized it was the universe telling me to get in gear and turn my hobby into a business.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I spent a lot of time in my younger years being told that I wasn’t good at art because I wasn’t a painter or sketch artist. I always identified as a performance artist only because of that. Until I thought myself how to knit and crochet. It really opened the door for me to tap into a new source of creativity I neglected for years.
I started with basic family friendly fiber arts, but in the last year I’ve made a major transformation rebuilding my brand from the ground up. Focusing on a more LGBTQ+ friendly audience. Going from cute cows, and funky frogs to BIG, voluptuous butt pillows, and happy p*nis plushies that just want a good cuddle. I’m also expanding outside of just fiber art into the world of leather and paper art as well.
Besides decking out homes with wild accessories, I wanted to empower people to create art themselves. Which is one of the many reasons I teach craft parties. There are so many people out there who don’t think they are artistically inclined, in any way, because they can’t paint a replica of The Last Supper. It’s not true, you just need to find your medium. So I decided to share that insight with as many people as possible, teaching both public and private craft classes. I have a wide range of crafts to choose from so you can always be creating something new. All my classes are 90 minutes or less and what you take home at then end is not just an piece of art you can be proud of but a new skill to share with others yourself!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If you spend a week with me I’ll take you to all sorts of places. We’d start of in Denver and hit up Jelly for brunch on 13th, walk around the hill and check out all the fun little shops. Head on over to Bourbon Grill on Colfax for some delicious chicken in town, then back up the Fax to end the night at 1Up Arcade. We’d spend the rest of the time bouncing up to Estes Park and see the Stanley Hotel, Pearl St. in Boulder. Go hiking in Golden at Lookout Mountain. I am quite the museum lover and we would have to check out the Nature and Science museum and the Botanical Gardens Chatfield! There are just too many places to choose from but those are some of my favorites.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to give a shout out to Moonlight Makes, a female owned craft party business, based in New Mexico that also mentors craft teachers themselves. I know if I need encouragement; or people to brainstorm with, or getting guidance in my business in any way, I know I always have them to talk to. They have been a instrumental part of my success.
